Looking for Chris Craft Stinger 260

Hey everyone, Im starting to look for another good 260 Stinger that needs some TLC. Id prefer an 1984-85 model. I cant really afford to buy one all fixed up at the moment, but have the time and place to rebuild another one. If you know of anything, please send me an email. thanks, Dan

Im looking for a good solid boat that I can build the way I want. Id also prefer the 85' and lower years as they seem to have had the better built hulls. I also like the windshield and flatdeck on them. They look old school comparted to the 86 and up models. There is a really nice 87 260 on ebay right now that is in Michigan that is very tempting though. Im currently the high bidder, but Im sure they want more than its worth.

I had a extremely nice 1985 260 Stinger I sold last spring to buy a house. I got around 13K for it at the time and I thought that was fair. The boat was completly gone over, had all new canvas, outdrives, etc etc etc. Now the American economy is so soft and the price of fuel is so high, there is going to be alot of these boats out there very reasonably priced. The couple I sold it too called me back a month or so ago and wanted to know If I was interested in buying it back. Id love to have it, but they were asking about what I sold it for.

I noticed some dealer now has PMSMITHS old 260 Stinger that is also all redone and they are only asking $10,500.00 for it. Too bad its not closer or I would atleast check into it.

thanks! Dan

Dan... check out craigslist too, there are alot of deals there, boats are SO!!! cheap right now I wish I was in a position to buy another one....
let me know if you buy something, I need to stop out for a beer!!

senzaspectre 07-12-2008 09:55 AM

This one looks nice! "always garaged, never left in water" and it's in MI.

HuronRiverRat 07-14-2008 11:47 AM

senza, thats the boat I have been watching on ebay. It seems like a fair price for the boat a few years ago, but times have changed.

Tim you are right.. It is a buyers market. I'll hold out until I find a great deal... Cause heck.. Once I buy it, I'll be stuck with it too.

I'm going to keep me eye on this one as it is a very nice looking boat.

Thanks guys.. Dan

Dan, buy a 312, they are almost as cheap right now, then I can ride on it since I did not get one, I wanted a 312....

HuronRiverRat 07-15-2008 03:26 PM

Id barely be able to put gas in the 260 yet alone the fuel guzzling 454 big blocks. I like the look of the 260 better anyways. Plus its for my wife and I think the 312 would be a bit intimidating for her. maybe not.. she loves the speed! LOL

I hear ya....

HuronRiverRat 07-18-2008 09:29 AM

Im going to go look at the one in the add there in Michigan. They are down to 10K now on it. With the economy being so bad good deals are popping up. I hope it looks as mint in person as it does in the pictures. It looks even nicer than my old one. I'll keep ya'll informed.

Oh no.. our old one was an 85' and it was alot nicer than that one. We were wanting to go look at the 87' 260 that we have been talking about, but the dealer that has it does not want to let us water test it. We even offered to put down a deposit before doing so, but they are firm on not water testing it. It made me a little leary about it. If im going to spend that amount of money, Im going to want to try it out first to make sure everything functions properly. So for now, I kind of backed off on it. Its 2 1/2 hrs away, which isnt too far, but when your busy it would basically burn up a whole day on the weekend just going to see it. If they were willing to water test it, Im sure I would have had the boat home already If it checked out.

Tim, send me your email. The one I had from last year doesnt work anymore.

Thats crazy???

Thats too bad it looked like a nice boat.

HuronRiverRat 07-31-2008 07:24 AM

I made an offer on the boat without a water test and they are supposed to let me know today If they will accept. They seemed eager to get rid of the boat especially this time of year. If they accept, I'll be getting a deal. The offer is pending that it is in the condition that they advertised it as. They told me I will not be dissapointed.... so.... We'll find out. If they accept my offer, I'll be taking tommorow off and Im headed for Michigan. I'll let you know Monday what happened.

Hi everyone,

I am located in the Netherlands and here is a Chris Craft Stinger 260 Eagle (build 1988) for sale.
It has 2 x 5,7 mercruiser and everything looks in a good condition. But since I've read some threads about a cracking hull, I got a bit confused what to do.....is the hull from buildyear 1988 also bad.....and when you're only sailing on lakes and rivers, can you have the same problems with that hull, or does that cracking problem only occur when you're take it to the max at sea?
Is here maybe a way to reinforce the hull or to divide that cracking-power? And for the engines, can somebody inform me wich is really important to look at or to listen to?

I'm new to this kind of fun, so any info is appreciated!

Thanks....

Hello Epru

Not a bad looking boat at first glance...although personally I would reverse the radar arch! Can't stand it when they are on backwards.

Things to check on 260's are the stringers both longitudinal and crossbrace. The big stringer behind the back seat is very important as the wood usually rots there. Also check the stringers carefully where the engines bolt down. Sometimes the outer ones let go as they are thinner than the centre ones.

Generally speaking the boats built from 82-87 are the most desireable and I have heard from the rumour mill that the 88-91 are the ones to watch as the hulls were questionable. Get a moisture metre too and check the hull and transom for moisture. You can buy a metre at hardware or lumber specialty stores or your local marina may carry them. They are about 50-100 USD approximately. I paid 80 bucks for mine and use it constantly.

Hope that helps.
