Any problem areas to look for on these boats in particular or just in general for that matter? This would be my first boat so I'm kinda jumping in with both feet. :readinghelp:

get your self a survey it will tell you if there are any problems and a good surveyor will teach you a thing or two about the boat lots to learn!!

Agreed. The engines will be the least of your problems. You need to look for rotted stringers, floors and hull issues.

Someone purchased a similiar one for about 19k and knew ahead of the purchase to spend about another 7k for transom repair, etc. I'll try to find the thread.

400 hrs on 454's is fine if they ck out. Rebuild time on those are about 1200+ hrs.

As stated get a survey for sure.

Asking price is $20k. Thought that didn't sound bad for the condition, but wasn't sure. Said to be all freshwater use. Any ideas where to find a surveyor in Oklahoma? How much should a survey cost? THANKS

Surveys can cost anywhere from 75 -250 bucks depending how detailed they are. The survey on my boat was 27 pages in length and very detailed with pictures.

I agree that 400hrs are not a lot if the maintenance was done regular such as oil changes etc. That boat looks like it's in pretty good shape from the pics you posted but DO check the moisture in the stringers and transom with a moisture meter.
20k sounds reasonable as well...

Good luck! Hope it works out for you. I have had mine six years and absolutely love it!

Thanks for the suggestions. Are moisture meters hard to use? I got to looking and now I'm not sure if it's a 390x or a 415x...wasn't the 415x a 390x with a swim platform?

http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxNj...Qz!~~60_12.JPG

He said the drives were TRS400. Are those good or bad? Maybe I'm thinking of Bravo1s as being bad. I just thought I read that one or the other wasn't too reliable.

Stinger390X 01-21-2012 08:47 PM

You can get a moisture metre at Home depot. They take a nine volt battery and you place it on the hull flat. You can get different readings of how much moisture content is in the fibreglass up to about two inches in thickness I believe.
They cost about 40 bucks or so.

All Stingers had optional swim platforms. Mine is moulded and is bolted on teh transom as a 4 grand option when new. The 415 might be the Fittipaldi special if it's a red boat. (grab that up as it's rare and worth large!!!)

The trs drives are great drives. I have those on mine as well. Bravos arre good drives too as they can handle the torque of the big blocks. Try to avoid Volvo or OMC...when looking for a boat.

Be careful w/the moisture meters. Especially a cheap one. Many boat deals ruined by poorly trained surveyors (anyone can hang out a shingle!) and his trusty moisture meter.
A good one in the right hands though can be golden.
I had a brother in-law yrs ago buying a pristine 39' Sea Ray. Had more money than sense and it took many beers to convince him he needed one. I even went over the boat with him and it "appeared" to be immaculate. All fresh water, I think 1st owner, Winter stored inside w/a cover on it and all maintenance done by same marina w/all work documented.
He finally negotiated and signed a contract contingent on satisfactory survey.
End up the stringers were rotted under both sets of motor mounts where they were lag bolted (!!!!!!!!!!!) in. Sealer on bolts broke down over time, heat, vibration and water wicked down their threads into the stringers and had no where to go.
Seller paid $9K for repair and brother in-law later said it was the best $200. he ever spent.

beefmalone 01-22-2012 09:08 PM

I guess I need to find some new places to look for a surveyor. Only one I found in the vicinity wants $20/foot plus $80/hour for the 2hr drive there and back.

hantunca 01-23-2012 05:49 PM

That's a beautiful looking Stinger - from the pictures, it's one of the better ones I've seen, but follow the advice here and get it surveyed. Could be a lot of time and money to fix if anything is wrong.

It's definitely a 390X. The 415s had a completely different look to them. The Fittipaldi versions of the Stingers were only offered for the 312s and the 334s, not the 415s.

If you're interested in more info including pictures of Stingers, check out my website at www.chriscraftstingers.com.

I've been watching your site for quite some time looking for a 390x in my budget. :) Thanks for the info. I thought I read somewhere on here that the 415x was a 390x with a swim platform but I guess that was incorrect.

Anyone in east oklahoma/west arkansas wanna come with Friday for a test ride? :)

I NEVER say no to a boat ride :evilb:

Unfortunaltely I an in Miami right now for the next couple of day so I can't make it. I know you will have a blast though!
Good luck and I hope things work out for you. I hope it is a fun ride and uneventful, meaning no problems, and you buy the boat! My buddy is drooling at the pics and wants to look at it too, as he is in love with my boat and wants to get one of his own. He is a bit tight with the wallet though... :)

Did you buy it?? Im in okla and know someone who may be interested in it.

beefmalone 01-24-2012 11:25 PM

Haven't bought it yet. Going to look at it Friday. Can't find a surveyor for less than $20/foot :O so I'm hoping to at least find a good mechanic that can run a compression & leakdown test on it.

johnnyboatman 01-25-2012 11:37 AM

if you dont mind me asking whats the price on it.

So...what's the skinny?

How was the test drive? Did it dance? Whats the interior like? Good shape or weathered?

Beefmalone the boat your looking at is on hans website: http://www.chriscraftstingers.com/ga...=Muldrow%20390 Does look to be in nice shape. If stringers and transom are good its worth 20k but in todays economy you can get it lower.

beefmalone 02-11-2012 12:35 AM

I decided to take a pass. Talked to someone from the area that knew the boat. Told me the guy's brother had grounded it a couple years ago requiring new lower units. Not a big deal really, but when I asked the guy about it he denied it ever happened. Also noticed the gallon jug of oil and 2 extra quarts in the engine bay. The guy I spoke with about it said he knew the man who owned it previously and that guy thought the motors were pretty used up then much less now. The owner's info is on that stinger website if anyone else is interested. I'd rather pay a little extra and not have any worries. thanks for all the advice on this one!

Stinger390X 02-12-2012 10:33 AM

Sorry to hear that the boat is on the edge...

Well it sure looks like a nice boat in the pics and too bad it's not cheap enough to spend a few pescoes and repower the old classic!?!
I suppose a pair of Merc 570's with number 8 drives would do the job?????

What do you think?:thankyouthankyou:

beefmalone 02-15-2012 07:51 PM

That would be SWEET. Again, I don't even know if that is really the case with the boat. I just don't have the knowledge or experience to tell so maybe I passed up a sweet deal? I donno. I really want a MV-colored boat whether it's a 390x or 38kv so I guess I will keep on looking for the "perfect" boat.

Nice ride :helmet:

johnnyboatman 02-19-2012 12:53 PM

did you ever think that the guy that was saying bad stuff about it was trying to buy it cheaper so if you didnt buy it he would have a better chance to steal it.

beefmalone 02-23-2012 09:14 PM

I doubt it since he is on the board and already has a KV plus he's local to the seller so if he wanted it he coulda snaked it up long before I was going to get there.

hantunca 04-19-2012 06:19 PM

Boat's up for auction on ebay again: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=261006048133
