New to the forum, new to Chris Craft. My new project is a 1987 230 Limited that needs a little work...everything wood above the stringers is dry-rotted or just not there, engine is long gone, seats missing, swim platform is full of screw holes, lower unit has a 1/2" cavitation burn above the prop shaft, prop is gone, starboard windshield glass is missing, forward hatch is broken. BUT...the hull, stringers, bulkheads, deck and transom are solid and dry, Alpha upper seems okay, and it only cost me two trailer axles, four hubs and the wheels and tires off our old jeep to get it home. Living on an island in the Caribbean is a logistics nightmare for parts, but South Florida is only a four-day cargo ship ride away, and I work for a major shipping company, so all is not lost. Pictures coming when I'm able to post; wish me luck!

Welcome to the board! Not many actively posting Chris Craft guys left it seems. Get up to ten posts and lets see some pictures of her!

yep ! share the love ! :)

Thanks guys. I'm trying to take pictures as I do things to show before and after. Hoping to get all the old wood and glass out and repair any stringer issues in the next couple weeks before my new used engine arrives.

What engine are you installing and what horsepower?
|
Its a Merc 5.7, 260hp, carbed, fresh water cooled.

Update: bought a transom assembly off eBay, picked up a pair of Alpha 1 drives here on island, engine made it to Florida and hopefully aboard the ship. I have pretty much stripped the interior of the boat. Everything wood in the cabin was either dry rotted or eaten by termites. Seat cushions and pillows in surprisingly good shape, as was the carpet and headliner. Floor in the cockpit had been replaced but not sealed underneath, so that's all gone. Transom will need work. Transom assembly is full of holes. Bottom edge of Y pipe outlet is gone, so I'm thinking about thru transom exhaust. Pictures soon come.

Canada Post will connect with USPS, it would definitely be the the most cost effective. PM me the address and I'll get a quote and send you some pics.

Started on transom
Finally working on the boat again...I've been collecting parts (thanks Jason for the Y-pipe!!) but haven't made time for actual work on the boat. I finally cut out the inner glass on the transom, the wood inside fell apart like paper...at least it will be easy to clean and prep for repair. The outer layer of glass is near 1/2 inch thick and solid, so that's good. The hull bottom and sides seem solid, but all the stringers aft of the fuel tank sound hollow, and the two that I cut back near the transom had the same flaky rotten wood inside as the transom. I haven't found actual termites, but it looks like that's what happened to this boat. As I said before, all the interior wood was rotten/eaten up, so I guess they got into the stringers and transom, too. The engine mount stringers are solid, as are most of the stringers and bulkheads forward.
I took pictures, but can't post them for some reason. Will try again later. |
Good to hear you are making progress!
Rotten wood is way easier to remove than somewhat ok wet stuff! We need progress pics! |

Here's a funny...Okoume plywood is about half the price of CDX here...$48 per 3/4x4x8 vs $97 for CDX |
