Top Gun - 1987

A friend of mine bought this
boat last week. What do you folks think about the rigging?

He paid around 48k for the complete boat. A good deal?

They gave him a guarantee that the motors and the drivers would be running when he picked up the boat, we were in a hurry when we looked at the boat, not a frenzy hurry but we flew to Denmark from Finland and needed to get on the plane back to Finland the same day.

I exptected the boat beeing in a much worse condition that it was. Everything seemed to be in a good condition, all the hydraulics/electric worked. And the gelcoat/stringers etc was also in a good condition, I got hundred of pics on the boat in all sorts of views. The boat came to St.Tropez new, and was there to 06. 350hours since new I thougt was a utophia when I saw the ad, but after I saw it IRL i belive it.

We will rebuild the cylinderheads this year and for the season 08 we will look at the bottoms of the motors.

If the motors are OK, do you folks think that 70-73mph is possible?

Thermostat housings are missing, so I assume it's not running.

If it's a sound hull, he has all winter to turn it into a something he'll enjoy.

Good luck. There's a lot of satisfaction in bringing a little older boat back to life.

They hade the motors "winter conserved", I dont know the english expression for it. :(

Thats was why we couldnt start the engines because they was full of glycol.

Bump! :D

Soon we are going to Denmark after the boat, how do we find out if the boat is a Fiberglass/Kevlar/Carbon TG?

You want to look at the hull from the inside. If you can see the "fiberglass" and it is gold in colour it is kevlar. I donīt think it is a Carbon version your friend bought. I saw the old buildsheets on a few boats and spoke to a few people and many of the #3 drive boats also was Kevlar but not all it has to do with HP as well. My old 1989 with #3īs and 2x750HP was a kevlar boat. It would run 80 mph on a good day.

It looked like the "fiberglass" was gold-colored, but I will take some pictures tomorrow and post them and hopefully some expert will comment them.

And now another problem, do anyone know how long the k-plane indicator cables are for a Top Gun -87? I tried to look at the ends of them, but i couldnt see the mark that indicated on their length?
In wich end of the cable are they marked?

How do you know its 575's? boat looks good though! gotta love those old tie bars!

Luuk 05-07-2007 02:02 PM

By looking at them.

STRAIGHTPRIORITY 05-07-2007 02:28 PM

i just ask because ive seen "575" that were nowhere near 575's but ok. get rid of the flame arestor and show me how you know its a 575... because it has big drives? because of the headers....

Now 350 is normal for a powerboat from 1987 in Europe.
Our own boat is from 1981 with 390hrs and has closed cooling engines.
And then thereīs a 1987 Scarab 38KV MV edition that has only 128hrs quite close to both of us. In fact itīs seldom any boat has 1000hrs on the hull, come to think of it I have prolly never seen(=not paid attention to) one either
Are you running the TG already and what did the engines turn out to be, to me they look like 420īs?
Tomorrow Iīll check a Kevlar Scarab that is already in the drink.

They look just like the merc 575's in the merc catalog from back then.

MikeyFIN 05-13-2007 12:21 AM

And like a 420 too sans the intakes.
Whats the carb in it. I figure it has Weiand TeamG intakes with a Holley Dominator 4500 flange so that would tell NOT being 420īs or the intakes have been changed from stock 420īs as they had two planes.

Also the block is a Bowtie instead of a GM production one as itīs not possible to build a 540 out of a stock block.. not even a tall deck.
Itīs been a few years I dug into a boat with triple 575īs (Cougar 46).

Luuk 05-14-2007 08:08 AM

Itīs Holley 1050īs on them. And its bowtie block, and the 575īs was built of bowtie blocks.
