38 TG value
Hey guys I'm hoping you can help. I have located a 1994 38 top gun, the exterior of the hull looks perfect, it has twin 454's which have been gone through and updated with dart heads and valve train claimed to make 525hp and have 0 hours. The bilge is very clean and has dual Eddie marine battery boxes, new strainers and what appear to be all new trim pumps. Boat has spotless bravo brives with full latham steering and tie bar as well as new mechanical trim indicators. Also has the new style swim platform, mirrored raised engine hatch, 2003 cockpit interior and fairly new gaffrig guages. The down side is the cabin is disassembled (90% of parts seem to be there in terms of doors etc) I would need to do headliner and side upholstery as well as recover everything, also the guage panels need to be re-installed. What would you think it's value is?? oh yea it has a trailer but it's a bit worn out
Thanks everyone |
Re: 38 TG value
My first thought is the horsepower claim seems high for a normally aspirated 454 unless it's been entirely rebuilt to hi performance. I may be new to the game here, but a re-do of the entire interior can be pretty expensive. My guess to offer would be around 50K +/- 10K, because it's going to take another 10-20K to complete with you doing much of the work. For instance, just to have a new cockpit cover done without the original as a template can cost a couple grand.

Re: 38 TG value
Thanks for your input but remember the cockpit is almost new (bolsters, rear seat and side panels. it's just the cabin which needs to be redone. I can buy the boat for 40k
|
Re: 38 TG value
Then I would think it's worth it. You'd have a nice boat for a great price. Going by what I see in the classifieds, you'd have a 60 grand boat worth about 90.

Re: 38 TG value
You can get the entire cabin re-done for about 10K (give or take a few K)
|
Re: 38 TG value
When you say re-done do you mean just upholstery or fitting doors hooking up the head etc??

Do you mean that this cabin in the boat that you are looking at is just bare fiberglass? |

Re: 38 TG value
Quit questioning and right the check! I would go right now. Thats a deal if the boat is structurally sound. Don't waste time. I think others on the board would agree. Get a survey and a leakdown on the power.

Re: 38 TG value
There are others on here that would know better -- but I would have to say based on the cabin layout and the lack of a notch in the transom that it is not a 94'. I would think closer to a 88'.
Am I right with this or off base, -- anyone? |

Raf No doubt about that!! MAKE SURE THAT YOU GET A SURVEY BY A QUALIFIED MARINE SURVEYOR THAT YOU HIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!! It wouldn't be more that $1500 to complete that cabin. It looks like most of it is there. Just remember....deals that seem too good to be true, usually are too good to be true!! Cover your azz! |

Am I right with this or off base, -- anyone? Mine is a 1988 and has the notch.....but it was originally a #3 drive (with 572 Hawks) boat and is a kevlar hull. |
Re: 38 TG value
Checking the vin would be the start -- the 87's didn't have the notch from what I've seennot sure about the 88's
Myself I'd leave it without the cabin and maybe just a covergirl for storage, and they're right it is pretty cheap if it is sound structure and mech. |
Re: 38 TG value
I have to agree, I haven't seen any of the 90's year vintage w/o a notch and with the older style cabin. I'd bet it
s a late 80's boat. |
Re: 38 TG value
even if its a late 80s boat, for 40 its a decent buy, if survey and leakdown pass.
and i'd finish it as a 1/2 cabin . With it being all white. you can't tell w/ a quick look how old it really is. |
Re: 38 TG value
hmmmm..thanks guys, if it is an 80's boat it certainly would seem less valuable, at least to me.

Re: 38 TG value
Old School is right! I must have been snoozin when I saw the pics. It is definately not a 94. First year for that cabin layout was 1991. Pool Whore might jump in here to give us some input as he has a 91 for sale. I do not know about the notched transom though. I would be careful especially if the owner is telling you it is a 94. If he doesnt know himself be careful. My 2cents

Re: 38 TG value
Confirmed..it is a 1987. I was going to buy it, finish it really nice and offer it for re-sale, now I'm not sure what I'd be able to profit.

Re: 38 TG value
BTW Oldschools boat is sweeeeeeeet!!!!!!
|
Re: 38 TG value
I'd be careful with the buy/resell thing -- you might find yourself with close to 50+ into it and then not find a buyer. If you want to keep it for a while that's different:eureka:
There is a huge selection of older cigs out there right now that are in that price range. It is a nice looking boat though. Good luck with what ever you decide. |

We are redoing a cabin a an early 90s boat right now. 38 foot seems a lot bigger when your doing that stuff.

If you are looking for something to keep for some time and have fun with and not too concerned with big MPH & natural motors, (non stepped) do it ! Your not gonna make big $ to try and finish than re sell . good luck !
