hi,
have 96 top gun... looking to install new depth sounder. instrument guys keep asking me if hull is solid glass or foam core.... assuming this boat is stock and not kevlar or carbon, would this hull be solid or cored ?

Most newer boats have a spot for a depth sounder somewhere in the bilge where there isn't any coring for a shoot-thru transducer. Should be a small circular section about two inches or so in diameter, give or take.

Can someone expain this a little more... "Solid or Foam Core" ?What is the "Foam Core" made of? How Thick? How does it effect the dxepth sounder? Where is the spot on the hull of a TG for the depth sounder? I have a 98 and there is a transducer barried into the hull just in front of the starbord engine. My depth sounder does not work and I am assuming it is the transducer. It looks like it has been permanently glassed over. Is this normal? How do I test it? How do I replace it if that is what it needs? Any help would be appreciated.

Most depth finder transducers can't shoot through the coring in a hull, be it balsa or other, why I don't know. So most boats have a spot in the bilge, about as close to the bottom of the boat as possible that doesn't have any coring, it's all fiberglass, where you can mount a depth sounder transducer using epoxy or rtv. If you have twins it will be a ***** to find it.

Thank D C I guess I'll get a new transducer and try it first before I do anything with mine. Mine is located just forward of the starbord engine (98 Gun). It looks like someone added it there. Does anyone else have one in the hull of a Gun? Or maybe I should ask, is there a "factory" location on a Top Gun hull for a transducer?
