31' Cig Bullets

Just looking for feedback on two local boats. Seem like pretty good deals and I know this is the place to find out. ;)

Both seem like good deals!!

Stormrider 09-21-2007 08:58 AM

i like the yachtworld one better.
man i can't believe the prices on these things.

lakeluvr 09-21-2007 09:48 AM

Both are pretty much all stock Bullets, which is about what you would expect to pay for one like that. And for someone with a limited startup budget might seem like a bargain. But we all know the cost of the upgrades and changes. Both ads have a long list of things, that are all standard on Cigs. But lets start adding up the cost of upgrades:

New dash and gauges, and white out front end
Newer 502, or bigger
Swim platform
4 blade props
New interior in cockpit
New cabin interior
New fancy paint work
And on and on

Add it all up and it makes mine an even better bargain.

I like the one on Yachtworld. Other than the cabine interior!

I really like your boat, but my "first big boat" budget doesn't go quite that far.

I've been doing a bit of research on boats for a while now and I'd like to hear from Cig owners what sets the Cigs apart. They hold their value better than most boats, from what I've seen. How would a 31' Cig Bullet compare to other comparable 31'-ish boats of the same time period, like a Formula 311? I'll have my boat at LOTO. Is the Cig the best rough water ride for that size?

Thanks again!

That 1989 was the subject of conversation the other day. Check this thread:

Looks like the Cig at Double Diamond might be a better deal. Seller could be ready to unload. Might have to check it out. Obviously depends on how tight it is and whether it needs anything. I can live w/o updates for a while as long as a boat is solid. That's always the question, isn't it? :D Survey!

Holy Smokes 09-21-2007 04:41 PM

Between those two, definately go for the 1988 at DoubleDiamond. The engines alone are what triggers that deal. If they're truly Merc 420HP's, they'll have all the goods on the insides and idle smoother than anything. I love my 420HP's in my 33 Cig.

I crawled around the 1988 one rainy afternoon, and everything seemed in line. But just as Lakeluvr says, it's all original and could use some updating. Lakeluvr's Bullet is completely refurbished and will never depreciate.

Holy Smokes 09-21-2007 04:48 PM

Upon further review of the pics, those engines on the 1988 are NOT Merc 420HP's. Merc used Holley 4150 carbs on those and used aluminum valve covers. Of course, both of those could have be traded out, but why would you? I'd look real hard at the engines and get the skinny.

Also, don't put alot of value into the trailer. It needs a full recondition.

TexomaPowerboater 09-21-2007 06:16 PM

I like the one on yachtworld. Something about the dash that makes it look better.

TexomaPowerboater 09-21-2007 06:22 PM

Hell if your going to spend $38K why stop at a 31bullet. How about a 1988 38 Top Gun with blowers for $38,500. Looks like a good deal.

Its got a nice paint job too.

Hmmm... that just doesn't seem right. Seems rather cheap to me for what it is. Anyone know anything about this boat?

TexomaPowerboater 09-22-2007 10:32 AM

A little too good to be true. I don't know anything about the boat, but I thought it might be worth looking into. Probobly a good project or somebody might just be looking to dump it before the winter.

No question Answer is YES

Hollowpoint 09-23-2007 08:41 PM

In a recent local HRPA poker run that included some pretty rough water in the ocean leg, only 15-20 boats of the more than 60 that ran completed the ocean part of the run. Of the ones that did, my best guess would be 50% of those were Cigs. I believe in front of me were a couple of Formulas, a Sunsation, and maybe one or two others. And ALL of them were longer than my Bullet.

That pretty much says it all....

lakeluvr 09-24-2007 11:36 AM

No comparison. For starters a Formula 311 will probably have the built in swim platform, which means it is functionally a shorter boat. A boating friend after riding in my Cig the first time, commented that it was the best riding boat of that size he had ever been in. Then a couple of weeks later he rode with me to the Shootout When that thing breaks up on Saturday it is a zoo trying to get out of there. Anyway after fighting all the traffic and waves and wakes we made it back home and his comment was: I take back what I said about being the best riding 30 foot boat I've ever been in, IT is the "BEST" riding boat I've ever been in. And that includes another friends 35 foot Formula that he had ridden in.

End of story.

Good Cig Bullet info! I'm looking to downfalls to these boats and can't find any. :)

i don't know of anything that compares in a 31 foot boat and its ideal for a rough lake like loto. small enough to trailer, small enough to manuever around the docks, heavy and long enough to not get beat to death on weekends, great resale value, great lines, enough room in the bilge that you dont have to stand on your head to change plugs. the only downfall is they are heavy and require HP to move them but its weight is also what gives the good ride.

Keytime 09-24-2007 05:05 PM

Will 420's put this boat up around 65mph?

Maybe. Just don't allow a GPS onboard!

1) Big boat (30+ feet) with a great ride
2) High speed (over 70mph)
3) Low price (under $50K)

Pick 2 of the 3! :D

carter38 09-25-2007 02:37 AM

I'm on my 3rd one now hands down one of the best riding 31' boats out there.

31Sunsport 09-25-2007 04:25 AM

I went by that 38 Cig the other day, Its in the back woods of Lakewood, NJ I'm going to stop and take a look at it, From the street it looks sweet. If thats the price we need to know why, right?

Another midwesterner! :D What years did they make the Bullet?

I was just thinking... someone out there MUST have a Cig Bullet named "Bite Me". :cool-smiley-011:

Only downfall I know is it takes a lot of HP to make them fast and the cockpit is a little tight! I owned a 92 and it had a great ride. 550 HP got 78 MPH.
