39 Top Gun w/700's

Does anyone have this boat? We were looking at getting one after falling in love with one we saw. We have a Formula 382 with 600's right now. We went on a fun run the other day from Sanibel to Marco in some pretty rough seas. The preditor boat (50ft Nor-Tech) looked as if it was on glass water while we were bouncing everywhere, catching air on almost every wave at 50mph. How is the ride of the 39 in the real rough stuff? We are wanting a rough water handling boat that can hang with the big boys in the fun runs.

jeff32 01-06-2008 02:47 PM

I'm surprised! You are looking for a 39 Cig while you own a 38 Formula. I always thought Formula's are a bit slower because the the heavier weight, thus making the boat more stable in rough water... But I'd say Cig 39 or Formula 38 compared to the 50 Nortech, this, I can understand there is a better ride..

You think there is so much of a difference between your 38 and a 39 Cig?

Anxious to read everyones thoughts on this...

OL40SVX 01-06-2008 04:47 PM

The 39 Cig will ride better than the 382 Formula, but the 39 aint going to ride like a 50ft Nor-tech. A few members on here have the 700 package in the 39. They are a match made in heaven, a great ride and 100+mph running all day long. You may want to look at a 42x or even maybe the 43 Nor-tech if you want to go that big. If your going new and need to trade your Formula give Ocean Performance a call. They deal both.

why would the 39 ride better than the Formula? Hull design? Weight of the boat? other reason?

OL40SVX 01-06-2008 09:44 PM

Stagger for one and also its a better hull. I know many people that have driven both and the Cigarette's ride better than the Formula, no offense.

PremierPOWER 01-06-2008 09:47 PM

We got the 382 for a great deal with 100 hours on it. It was our first off shore boat and we wernt ready to invest $650k on a new top of the line boat. We have had it for a year now and absolutly love it, but want to be able to hang with the big boys now. I dont expect a 39ft boat to handle the same as a 50 footer, just curious how the 39 handles the rough. We will be at the Miami boat show looking at Nor-Techs and Outerlimits as well. The formula is a nice quality boat, but we are looking for more speed and more of an exotic boat

PremierPOWER 01-06-2008 09:51 PM

And when i say a boat that can hang with the big boys, i mean speed in calmer water. Not neccesarily real rough water. I was impressed with how well the 50ft NorTech handled in 5-6ft waves though but wouldnt expect a 38-39 ft boat to handle the same

Jupiter Sunsation 01-06-2008 10:22 PM

I have been on a 43 Nortech with triples that rides like a Cadillac in 3-4 footers. NT's will never be the fastest but they will ride the best of anything you are looking at. Cigarette/ Outerlimits will be fast but will have an agressive ride compared to the others.

no offense for sure! I've always wished I'd own a Cig... just did not turn out like that... someday it will.not too far...:D

same thing for me, it's my first big offshore boat(previous was a 26) and I'm satisfied with my boat. But just like you, now I know better what I wish I would have / need to have.

Just not easy to find THE right boat, because we all don't get to drive 10 different boats in the same summer, so we can then choose from... I'm also looking for my next boat, but still don't know what would be my choice... I feel like I would need a summer or 2 shopping for the right thing, but at the same time, who has time to shop that much?

I believe ive seen your boat somewhere before. It was either in the 1000 Islands or Lake George. Anyways is was the nicest 357 i've seen. Now the older formulas like yours ride very well!! My Dad had a 402 SR1. Im sure you'll get your Cigarette soon!!

PremierPOWER 01-06-2008 10:44 PM

Yea we toured Nor-Techs factory and fell in love with Stu Jones's new 39 with 700's. Then I found a dealer with the 39 Cig on there lot and fell even more in love with that. But if we are going to spend this much on a boat, I want to make sure its the right boat and exactly what we want. It would be pretty cool to tour the Cig factory too. I cant even imagine all the choices when building one from scratch with colors and options. Over whelming

OL40SVX 01-06-2008 10:47 PM

Sounds like you need to tour the Cigarette factory!!:D You wont be disappointed and the 700's are the perfect package!!

I have an 08' Cig 39 w/700's and love it! I have been in several 35 and 38 Formulas and they are a very nice boat. I do think the differences you will notice with the Cig over the Formula will be a drastic improvement in acceleration and a better balanced and handling boat. The top speed on the Cig will be approx 10mph faster with the same power. The 39 Cig's are a killer rough water boat. I have had mine out in some very snotty stuff and was very impressed with it and this is our 5th Cigarette we have owned.

Hope this helps.

how fast does a 39 go with 700's?

Mine runs 105 but I have heard 103-107. That is ringing it out. With an absolute full load it will still run over 100.

PP and Jeff32, if you're looking for a Cigarette and want it exactly the way you want, do yourself a favor and go by Phil's place while you're in town for the Cig Factory tour. The Cig plant is only about ten minutes away. Phil has forgotten more about Cigs than most people know.:D

jeff32 01-07-2008 05:26 PM

Phil is on my to do list for that vacation week!

LostCowboy 01-07-2008 07:15 PM

You can buy mine if you want a really nice used '07 w/ 700's anf you like the colors. Call Phil at Lip-Ship.

I just toured theCigarette factory. Very impressive! Took us out on a 39 with 700s. Awesome boat! Ran 103. Ive owned a formula and a fountain. Nono of wich rode neer as good as a Cigarette. The cabin in the formula has alot more room though. Im lookin to buy one now!

PremierPOWER 01-09-2008 02:08 PM

Yeah the cabin was a big selling point on the Formula for us but we just havnt used it as much as we thought we would. We have a Regal for over nights and island hoping. The pictures of a Cig cabin are somewhat decieving. When I got in the cabin of the 39 TG I was actually pretty impressed. Im about 6'1" and there was enough head room when sitting on the seats. THe forward berth even seems a little bigger than that on the 382 Formula.

Keep in mind the 39 Cig is approx 3' longer than the 38 Formula. Formula counts the swim platforms....

fastoys 01-09-2008 07:13 PM

Im 6' and i was able to lay across in the 39. Big bed up front. That boat rocks!

blume 01-09-2008 07:45 PM

here's another one For Sale !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well I have 4 for sale, 1075, 850's and a 600. I also have a 700 boat not pictured. I also take trades.

PremierPOWER 01-09-2008 07:53 PM

We are concidering 850's or 1075's but we boat year round between summers in indianapolis (our local lake plus trips to the great lakes, LOTO, etc) and our place in Punta Gorda, FL and can easily put 100hrs per year on the boat and thats with 3 other boats so we spend a lot of time on the water. 700's seem more practical with fuel and maintenance with as much as we would be using the boat.... If we toured the Cig factory and showed we were legit and serious, would they be able to give us a ride or no?

jeff32 01-09-2008 10:32 PM

they said no to me in their last e-mail last week...But i did not have any intention to buy... But I told them I was ready to pay for a ride
