Stripped the panel and had it and had the whole dash painted this past weekend.

I want to know more about replacing the compass with a GPS.

Cost, electrical, GPS antenna, which GPS unit did you use?

carter38 01-30-2008 11:39 AM

I just had it repainted white the people before me never took it apart to paint anything and its been driving me nuts the way it was. Vincent at vincentcustompaint painted it all for me last weekend.

Clay its a gamin 168 the flush kit and external antenna are about $150 bucks. The rest is just your time a labor. To do it right you need to fill in some on the top or bottom or you will have a gap. I am replacing all the cables as well while its apart. I will post more pics as it goes back together if you like.

Hey Dustin,
Here is a link from when I did the same thing to my Bullet. The GPS install starts at the bottom of page 1. I wasn't aware that they had a kit....I fabricated it from Lexan...Old School style!:D:cool-smiley-011: P

PS- There weren't any gaps!

Yes, they make a flush kit that snaps it into place and out so you can take it with you if you like. The one we did if jeff's bullet the one in the had a little gap. Mine was going to be about a 1/4 inch on top or bottom so we just added to it and recut the whole deal. My panel never really fit to good so we added glass all the way around so it fits great now and all new holes to screw into will make it nice. I just welded up all the existing holes on the panel and started over.

looks good carter!

you probably already know this but if you need access from the back side, you can take off one of the panels in the head.

Yes, that panel is very useful.

Pics dont do this Bullet justice. It is one of the cleaner ones I've seen.

Carter,

Looks great! What did you do with all of the wires from the old gauges? Did you label the wires? I wanted to do the same thing with my Bullet but I'm concerned that after I removed all the guages and pulled the dash it would be a nightmare with all of the wires? How did you do it?

I pulled them out one at a time and rehooked everything right back up.

Very nice, what was the size of the hole you cut for the GPS flush mount kit? Most GPS set ups require the antenna to be mounted 3ft from the unit, do you notice any issues with it being mounted closer than the recommeded 3 ft. Awesome job.

carter38 02-25-2008 08:49 PM

Thanks, it works fine and every flush kit comes with its own template.

Cree 02-25-2008 09:14 PM

I am asking about the flush kit measurements of yours to determine if I will need to fill in the existing hole as you did. I do not have my compass out yet and curious if I will need fill or a plate. Thank you - Cree

Hollowpoint 02-26-2008 06:53 AM

Carter, sweet looking boat. I wish mine could look that good in a few years!

BGIII 02-26-2008 08:12 AM

That is the way to do that job. The GPS install looks great.

carter38 02-26-2008 11:42 AM

Cree they all have a different size holes pull your compass its not the best hole you seen cut before trust me. I would plan on filling if you want to make it look right. I all depends on what unit you end up with. I have not done one the same yet close but still different you just have to pull it see what you got and go from there.

DealmakerC6 02-26-2008 05:53 PM

Has anyone installed the Northstar Explorer 550 in a Bullet? Looks great in the Livorsi catalog.
