gps in for '87 topgun

What"s the best spot to mount a gps? I was thinking of removing the compass, has anyone done this and what brand is best (garmin?) any help would be appreciated.

I have a GPS MAP 478, I really like it. It's not as "baller" as most of the units guys have on here, but it was also under $1,000.

Cool part is, at the end of the season I can pop it out and use it in my truck all winter, it comes loaded with US street maps, does turn by turn directions, ETA, a whole bunch of features. Real easy to set up and read on the boat too.

Look around there has been posts before about removing the compass. Some guys have done a fine job of this. I have it on my spring to do list. I'll post pics once I get it started. I'm using a 487C on the dash and a 1030 over the cabin door (I think that's the number) I have a 99TG

Here is where mine is mounted in my '88. I'm in the process of replacing it in the same location with an updated model. (garmin 2006c)

Old School, I like that location and I get to keep the compass just in case something goes wrong with the gps. What can I expect to spend on a decent unit? Thanks again. These threads are really helpful.

Probably $1200-2000...........or, if you don't want to spend alot, you could buy the one that I'm removing from my boat!!:D:D

It's a Garmin gpsmap 225 chartplotter. I have the unit, a flush mount plate, the antenna, all of the wiring, a bluechart chip for the Chesapeake Bay/mid-Atlantic area and a manual.

$350 and it's all yours!!

Anything Garmin is nice. I have an old 182C and works great. The newer replacement is a192c I think but all the units are great.
