Cafe VS Gun

:cool-smiley-011:I'm tryin to get a feel for Cig values, I have seen both of the following boats for sale reciently. The match up, 1987 35 Cafe 454 cyclone 420 hp 15hrs pt 10hrs stb rebuilt, trs, lots of new stuff, original graffics, new upholstry, gill exhaust, nice boat, asking 59k mabey take 55 w trailer. VS 1987 38' Gun, new/total rebuild Merlin 588s, no3 drives, bam900 trans,5-6 hrs on power packages, stainless marine exhaust, excellent cond, w trailer asking 59k mabey take a little less? Let me know what you guys think. It seems the gun is the better deal if its apples to apples as far as the condition of power packs and survey.... I'm relitively new to this whole gig so if i've grossly underestimated/overestimated the value of these floaters let me know...

Unless the gun is a total piece of cosmetic crap their is only one decisin to make........(send the money to the guy with the gun........

Plus if you really want a good comparison post pics (detailed) OF EACH BOAT....

Chris Sunkin 04-15-2008 04:35 PM

Keep in mind that if anything is wrong with the driveline in the TG, it's going to cost you 2 to 3 times to fix it what the Cafe would.

It would be highly unusual for both boats to have nothing more than "checkout time" on fresh repowers. Most people don't freshen up right before the dump a boat.

Where atre you at or shopping? You need someone with some experience to guide you through this... unless you can afford to make a $10, $20 or $30 thousand dollar mistake.

$30K on the very low end. I've seen a couple of six figure mistakes by guys who "thought" they knew what they were looking at.

I know of one !!:cool-smiley-011:

vintage38 04-15-2008 08:00 PM

Hey, I'll heed all the suggestions. The only boat I'm serious about right now is the 38' flat deck and I'm still doing my home work. I'm being VERY careful. I believe I have taken the right steps so far and I will NOT buy if I dont get that warm and fuzzy feeling.. And, I do not have an extra 30k just sitting around for a avoidible mistake so I'll listen w consideration. Thank you...

Dreamer, did you see either of those boats in person?? I did when I was down looking at mine. No thanks on either one. I know this, mine will sit for a loooooong time before I let it go in the 80's.

Vintage, don't know if you saw this one but it's another possibility. A little above the price of the boats you listed but can't hurt to call and talk to the owner.

That's well and good if your friend was willing to accept $99K for his. Just stating the fact that both of those you listed were about par for the selling prices.

dreamer 04-16-2008 08:34 AM

regardless for 80k ur gettin newer/ hull/ parts/ interior/ motor and better off than gettin an old trs no hydr. steer 454/whatever motor for 60k

Back to the topic,
If both boats are comparable in appearance and both pass a marine survey, I would go for the Gun. More boat and better hardware. #3 drive is pretty bulletproof.

I would probably agree - if nothing else resale should be slightly better with that power, and that boat.

Precisely!

Quinlan 04-16-2008 03:18 PM

I am going to step up to a gun in the near future and have heard they can be tough on drives. Is that true or is it more on the Driver actions. leaning toward 500 or 525s nothing to crazy. I have over 650 hours on the outlaw and have not had any drive problems. Just curious.

Full cabin Gun is a heavy boat. A captain that isn't very prudent with the sticks can cause problems (wave jumping or holeshots). A captain that continues adding horsepower can cause a problem. Also, some older Guns came with standard Bravo 1's (not XR) - that's another issue. Depends on what year model you're looking at. If it's a newer TS TG with a half cabin, some of the weight and drag issues are remedied.

tanner 04-16-2008 04:19 PM

It's all driver.. Period,, not coming off the sticks, being in water you don't belong in, hole shots with tabs up.. all of this is uneccessary and will pose problems.

tony stamis 04-16-2008 06:14 PM

those boats would be a mistake for you wnelles your cafe is a 96 with bulldogs and blowers imco extreme advantage drives the boat was keept indoors and never used if you want a topgun you better off waiting and getting a newer twin step

vintage38 04-17-2008 07:57 AM

Thanks boys, I've been traveling for two days. I stopped to look @ an 88 Gun in Cape Cod and it was conveyed as "excellent condition" but was in fact a POS, not all that bad but def not Excellent, very dirty interior some rips, faded out helm kinda ratty cabin, claimed fresh 588s but no recipts and dyno sheets with no dates, no recipts for outdrive services +aluminum intakes and exhaust showing signs of age.... This boat is in the most recient classified section of Powerboat. I have never seen it on OSO. The other Cig, the cafe I was refering to is on Boattrader.com in Fla, check it out if you want. I'm headed out to Chi town to dyno that 85 Flat deck(OSO classifieds) on Sunday, I'll post the results. I'm trying to absorb what you guys are sayin and form some opinions about this, I appreciate what has been said....thanks....BTW, sick avatar Tony!
