Race Hatch
I am looking for a race hatch to fit a Cafe. I don't think too many people raced Cafe's so will I need to fabricate. I just want a light weight hatch to run when the padded hatch is not needed. I gotta have the padded hatch for the lake runs, wifey wants to layout. I imagine I could save a couple of hundred pounds(?) and would look pretty sharp.
Any suggestions?? |
gary,
caferacer on the forum here bought a hatch direct form the factory if i'm not mistaken. Mebee try giving them a ring at (305) 931-4564. hope this helps! btw, I like the avatar!:) :) Sean |

Titos,
What about that? Do you think you can help me? G Sean, the avatar is the BOMB!! Thanks buddy! |
Cigarette made me a stock hatch for a sunken sunpad which i modified with some harwood scoops. It came out real well! plenty of room for perhaps...intercoolers. And i still have a little sunpad inbetween the scoops. Cigarette had no problems helping me at all. They made me several pieces, and even got a tour of the factory when i picked everything up. They are truely a great group of people. I`m sure that they would be happy to help.

I'm in the process of doing what caferacer did. I'm using my stock hatch and adding scoops. I looked at having the hatch pad "raised", but it was just too expensive. There's a good picture of this setup on scope's web site

Cignifiant and Tom,
I appreciate the tips but I am not necessarily looking for blower room, just save some weight. I was figuring a light weight layup, glass hatch with vents could probably be a couple of hundred pounds lighter(?). The standard hatch is heavy. I am very familiar with the blower scoops in the SCOPE picture, they are on a friends Cafe (for sale on OSO) and the others are on BCC's boat Ruckus. That is my boat in the picture, 2nd from the end. Gary What Up Titos ??? |
I'd say the standard hatch is 250-300 lbs. I know, because I'm pulling the engines and had to remove the hatch by myself yesterday. You might save 100 lbs with another layup, but it would also be more flimsey.
Anyway, good luck. Nice to see all of those Cafe's out your way.. |
Cignificant,
I was thinking that hatch weighed more than that. While you have yours off .... see if you can weigh it ... then I can tell if the search will be worth it. There are bunch of Cafe's out here and most of them are very clean ... that's something considering the saltwater environment. At the SCOPE Poker Run last summer, there were 6 and there are a few more I've seen around the area. I like the look of the different F2 hatches on the Guns. Gettin' Ciggy wit' It G |
Gary, you might as well just drop a coule of scoops on the new hatch anyway. More air, looks tight and then you can blow those puppies when you're ready and not need to worry about the hatch! Plus I'm thinking those scoops would weigh less than the holes you would cut out of the hatch.....A little added weight loss.;) :D :D
You ready for Havasu?? Tank |
Do you really think 100 lbs off a 9500 lb. boat is really gonna make a difference? Maybe .2 mph.
|
I am not necessarily looking for speed, but if any comes with it, mo' betta. Removing 200 lbs from the ass end of a boat will do something, if only to lighten the ass end by 200 lbs.
Plus, I think it would look cool. Down here in SoCal, custom vehicle capital of the world, there is no end to making your ride look cool. Cars, bikes, boats ... skateboards, you have to personallize it. I want my **** to stand out amongst the BCC's, DMan's, Jeffrey's, KWB's, Stinson's, PhantomChaos and others. G |
Cig 1 - I understand, Just givin some Chit. Every little bit helps. After I get everything working right on mine I might be able to worry about that stuff. Maybe next year. Good luck.

Too late, I already put it back on. I put both engines back in Monday night. But I can easily lift either end by myself (no cushion).
I like the new hatches too. I was looking at having the center of mine cut out and raised, and installing naca ducts. The price tag came to $4500 so I decided on the scoops. Here's what I was thinking about.. |
Cignificant, that's a nice rendition(sic) .. that WOULD be sharp ... $4500 ... yeoweee
Jim, this is my third year with this boat and I am just now getting to the cosmetics .... You got the right boat, take your time and do it right. One of the guys from your area with the ?32 Skater? came down to our SCOPE Poker Run last year ... you should follow him down this summer. Gary  |

Gary, I like the rendition also...i think it would be better thatn the scoops...no offense to those who have put them on, just my humble opinion.
it is styled much like the new boats and would make a great update. 4500 sounds pretty steep though.. |
If anyone wants to follow my rebuild process, I've posted pictures at www.geocities.com/greshah
My target is to have everything redone (engines, cuddy, cockpit, dash, hatch, and nose cones) by April 1 (yes, of this year :D). Then next winter, it will just need paint. |

Cig 1 - That would be Don Holtz and it's a 36 Skater. He is a very good friend of mine. He and I run the Channelman's Club up here. I hope to make it down this year but don't have a truck yet. I may just fly down and try to hitch a ride with someone. I've been about 110 in the Skater but the cats kinda scare me a little. I don't ride with others well to start with. The pic of your boat was the one that sold me on the Cafe' Racer. Here's a pic of my CR.

Gary, Do you guys have your CRT logos painted on or made from vinyl? I got a couple from Cigarette and they are about an inch smaller than the ones on there now. Your's are much bigger.
Here's the pic of your boat that sold me. :D |

Are these two boats one in the same. He must have showed up late.:D
|
Jim,
The white Cafe w/ red stripe is the same. It belongs to Dan MacNamera of Archer Marine. It has carb HP500's and runs strong. It hard running with him in the rough because he has the racers edge (big cajones). My logo is painted. I believe it is original paint (if anyone know different, let me know). Gary |
