Top Gun Electrical Problems
I have a 98 gun and I have one engine that will not turn over from the helm. I have tested the switches at the helm and solenoid next to the ECM on the engine. All test good. I can jumper across the terminals to start or I can jump 12VDC to the coil wire on that solenoid to start. When I hit the start switch, I do not get 12VDC to the start coil mentioned earlier. This was an intermittent problem at the end of the season and now it is "Full Time". Does anyone have a wiring schematic for a 98 TG? I am electreical by trade so no problem trouble shooting. A road map would be awsome.
Thanks |
Do you have the round shaped plug on the engines?
The wire should be yellow with a brown stripe ?! And it should go directly from startswitch to starter. The only thing i could think of is either switch or the conection in the plug at the motor.:party-smiley-004: |
I have the round connector at the engine. I'v had that off and on a couple of times hoping it might be a bad connection there. No luck. The yellow /Red wire from the starter goes to a solenoid mounted next to the ECM module by the distributer. The helm switch energized that solenoid and I don't get voltage to the solenoid when I hit the start button. Voltage is good leaving the button but nothing at the solenoid. Kind of crowded back that so short of pulliing the connector out, cant tell much. If I new what pin supplies the "Start Command" I could verify continuity from the switch to the connector and determine which side of the connector to troubleshoot.
Thanks for you input |
I'm not totally familiar with your system. but do you have a neutral safety switch? Pos. on your shift lever that may be acting up?

That's a great idea! And since I just reversed prop rotation for more stern lift, it's highly probable. I'll check that out and let you know.
Thanks |
Just jiggle the shifter back and forth a little bit while you're turning the key. My bet is the nuetral safety switch as well.

Thanks I have the manual for my 90 Cafe - should be similiar. Shoot me your email and I will send it to you first thing tomorrow morning - it is on my laptop but i left it at work. |
Chewy, I have the same problem!! The port motor will "click" but not turn over unless the starboard motor is running. I put a new switch in it last season and it really didn't help the problem. It is very intermitten though. Whe it doesn't turn over I have to by-pass by jumping the terminals.
Do we have the same problem? I was told by my mechanic it's some sort of electical spike or some sh!t. I really wasn't paying attention. He also took the neutral kill switch out so now it'll start in gear too. It helped the problem but did not solve it. For now I just start the starboard first, then the port until I can chase down the problem. Or until you chase it down for me and let me know what to do!:drink: |
Thanks SEAFORDGUY. Any wiring info will help. I haven't been able to check the switch yet. My email is [email protected].
TANK... Nice to here from you. You gave me some good info when I was lookin for my gun in 04. Do you still have the one you got from Phil with the #3's. By the way, I didn't follow your advice and have put money into the bravo's. All in all, I love my boat. I'll let you know what I find. Hopefully it will help. |
