38 Top Gun questions.
There was a 2006 38 Top Gun in the classifieds recently that I was interested in, but it dropped off yesterday. My question is this: the boat had 600's which seem to be very rare. Approx. how fast should the boat run with that setup and is the additional HP versus 525's worth it? Also, I don't recall seeing any of the TG's with AC or generator.....does Cig ever put them in TG's? Thanks ahead of time for the information.

With that little of difference in hp, I'd go for the 525's purely because 87 octane can be found almost anywhere unlike premium.
There have been some Gun's with Generator and air. |
Speedwise low 90's
|
LOW 90's??? That seems a little high to me. I have a '97 straight hull, heavy gun. I have about 540 HP each side running labbed 26's at about 5350 rpm's. I can see 74 mph on my GPS on a good day. 525's may be a little more and 600's a little more still....but low 90's?? Maybe with a newer hull.

Wilds boat with 575's running a little more boost than stock hit 92. You're about on with the strait hull, my 93 would run 76 with 525sc's and dry exhaust and my 97 was mid 80's with 640 HP and stock, non-labbed props. Also you may want to check prop slip, my understanding is the 97's were build with a little higher X than others. I know I had a lot more prop slip on my 97 over the 93. I really wanted to put some 5 blades on it and see how it worked out. I could feel them slip, hook up, slip again.... |

It's my uncle's boat. Boat does 93mph in perfect conditions...90mph everyday of the week. Biggest difference with the 600s vs. the 525s is the acceleration...its night and day. Let me know if you need any other info on the boat. Boat has not sold as of yet...ad needs to be put back up. Thanks

According to some research Magicfloat was doing to sell a 600/382, the 600's are now rated by Mercury to use 89 octane.....

Thanks for the information! I was under the impression that 600's use 87 octane. I couldn't deal with pulling it out to fill up.
|
oops...sorry guys. Being a blower motor there was once the assumption 91+ was required.

Robert Scimeca Is your uncle's name Vinny? Does he have the yellow/orange TG? If so, I called and talked with him about it and then followed up with an e-mail requesting additional pictures, but never heard from him. Within a day or so, it was not in the classifieds anymore....I assumed it was sold. |

Matt and Julie (Throttle-Up) are DYING to put a bigger set of wheels on her and take it to the Kilo Shootout, but, I'm not doing it. Doing the math, it's safe to say the boat "will" run 102. However, at 98/99 MPH, it jumps on plane like a rock star and is an "all around" well propped poker run beast!!! Here's the 98/99 MPH Pic. http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/8...212120tfw1.jpg http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/9...jpg/1/w800.png http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/4...ellers2qr7.jpg http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/t...jpg/1/w800.png |
98-99...looks like 97.5 to me.
|
Judging by offshore cowboy, the 39 is 6-8 mph faster than the 38?
Is a 39 525 boat faster than a 38 525? |

Offshore cowboy is running 6 blade props tweaked by throttle up i believe... hence the higher top end...ours is running stock merc 32s...i'm guessing the same 6 blade props on a 38 would add a few mph as well

vinnie's topgun is one of the cleanest kept boats around!!!!

A couple more questions if you don't mind......does anyone know at what hour 600's typically need a refresh? How do the XR's hold up with 600's? And finally, what kind of head room is in the cabin? Thanks again.
Robby, Has Vinny had any drive issues? |

I don't know if you remember this, but I looked at your 38 ZR earlier this year at Pier 57. I loved the boat, but decided against it because of the lack of head room in the cabin. Can you comment on the head room difference between the ZR and your new TG? Thanks |

Robby, Has Vinny had any drive issues? 600 is a great motor. I would be concerned with the reliability of an XR drive behind a blower motor. Now if your easy out of the hole and run on a flat body of water, no problem. Choppy water and more then 4 blades is going to be very hard on the drives. Just plan on putting new ones on every 100 hours and you'll be fine. XR's are inexpensive and easy to change. |

The boat has not had any drive issues. Drive oil has been changed regularly. If your quick with the sticks and dont do too many hole shots, the drives are reliable. Not sure on the refresh schedule on the 600s. I'm sure someone more knowledgable on the issue will chime in.
