#3a's to 5's

1999 Top Gun Cigarette.....Can i swap my 3a's for 5's....???? Will i be able to get the boat up on plane?? How come we dont see many Top Guns with 5's. is there a reason for this??? What would be some advantages and disadvantages other than top speed?

thedonz 11-05-2009 06:20 PM

Mine has 5's from factory and their GREAT.......they can hold big power...our's is staggered and has twin 1200's

what about putting boxes on your 3 a's? raise your x dim. then you have the same thing. they are almost the same drive, just a little longer with the 3a.

Factory staggered.....
I believe one was "Fat Boy"

Carl's, Pure Pressure has Big Chiefs with Staggered #5s

bigfarmer 11-05-2009 08:56 PM

who makes boxes that will fit 3's??? will 3" be high enough to make a difference??

thisistank 11-05-2009 09:22 PM

I don't get the desire to put boxes on 3's....All that's going to do is DROP THE X. If you're going to put boxes on and raise your ex, just swap the drives for 5's like you wanted to in the first place. 5's will raise your x over 3's with out cutting the transom (shorter vertical shaft).

I would say if you swapped out your 3's for 5's you will see:

A) longer time to plane
B) Little more top end
C) Props coming out more often in rough water
D) A SWEEEET rooster!

I agree 100% on all the above.
I also thought about doing this but not enfough positive gain.

First staggered T/G was my 90. Campaigned for Cigarette in 89 by Mark McManus when he was at Everglades Marine. Then sold and Tres Martin maintained it for years. They are incredible boats. Fat Boy raced in Europe and I think Carls but don't think there was a 6th one.
Be careful when you mess with the drives on a Top Gun. Cigarette has spent allot of time making them perform perfect with the setup it came with. The usual problem with switching to box's, 5's, both and going to #6's is porpoising. Not really a big deal. Drop the tabs a touch, scrub off a couple MPH but after a certain speed 70-75 you can start taking them back up and then look out.

I have been on this boat and run next to it on several poker runs and if someone is looking for a Gun with #6's this should be the one. http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...o30929-en.html

LapseofReason 11-08-2009 08:19 PM

What about the Konrad drive, they claim that is the hot lick drive when wanting a higher x dim. and a stronger drive over the 3a ?

I know that there wasn't 6 only 5....Carl's boat was built to race in Argentina but it never did race. His is also the heavest one built because of the rough water over seas. so i guess they are all here in the states than :drink::drink:

I have asked this question also and I think if I could get 10-12MPH I would consider doing this project. Dont forget the # these guys are talking about are staggerd boats. They are not apples to apples to what you are asking. To get a stright bottem side by side gun to run over 100 MPH is almost unheard of. And you also have have a full cabin.
If you run in the mid or upper 90 MPH range I think that is very respectable.
There are some production/cookie cutter boats out there that will run well over 100MPH with your power if speed is what you are looking for. What ever you decide keep us posted I will be very intrested in the final results and good luck.

To give you an idea, 3800 RPM is an honest 65 mph GPS in our side by side No. 6 Gun. The drives could be raised by removing the one inch spacer, if top speed is your primary goal. Figures I would pick up some trash in the speedo pitot tube the day we took the pics. 5000RPM puts you up around 85 mph.......and 5600 RPM at WOT is all relative :D :
