GPS in place of compass

Has anyone replaced the compass in the middle of the dash (older Top Guns, Cafe') with a GPS unit? If so, please post pics.

I replaced my speedo with the GPS. I would keep the compass, at the end of the day it is the most important navigation tool you could have.

It's either going in place of the compass or over the cabin door. Kind of on the fence..... Another option is on the passenger side, though not really a fan of that.

+1 I like the location of the GPS, but I would never, ever leave home without a compass. These are "offshore" boats aren't they? :party-smiley-004:

Here is one I did. I painted it to match the console, it's an insert that goes in the old compass hole. I didn't want to permanently modify the console until we decided we liked the location and the GPS itself. Compass is still on board, its stowed in a cubby somewhere.

I would not choose this type of install, I would go for a more custom look if it was my boat.

It was smoothed and painted to match, not ideal but it works. I don't see how a jack-arse comment like that wouldn't be offensive

hi guys, i am in the same crazy situation. want to install a gps-plotter on my cafe. but don`t no what the best place in the dash-area. now my idea: (sorry can`t post pics) -in that housing wher is situated the depht finder (drop out and reinstall on other place) i will install a garmin GPSMAP 620.
a relative small plotter but with great ability and nice price. and on this place you have a good few on it . better than on top of the cabin door. and you don`t have to destroy the dashpanel.

This application works well on my Cafe. We used Stainless Marine indicators ...

bmanafort 03-19-2010 06:42 AM

That is a real nice looking dash with a custom install.

Mr.P i though about that. I wouldnt spend the cash for the heads up though. I would take the indicators move them to the switchs for the drives/tabs. Move the drive/tabs to under the shifter. Im still toying with ideas and my plotter is pretty big

How do you remove the panel where these GPS units are mounted? I have a small outdated GPS mounted there and would need to cut a larger opening. I read all about the christmas tree clips/etc. But how big of a project is it to rermove this panel?
