a question about mercs 575's
I am looking at buying a Cigarette with 575's. The boat has about 300 hours with nothing being done to the motors besides oil changes. What should get done on these motors and when? Any input would be helpful.
Thanks Bill |

I went to merc school and I was told by them that any of the MERC RACING BLUE MOTORS at 200hrs need the top end's done what I mean by top end is NEW VALVES VALVE SPRINGS CHECK THE ROCKERS PUSH ROD AND LIFTERS if they have blowers they need to be REBUILT

Trust me I learned the hard way!!!!!!
All the above. Have the heads gone through, blowers rebuilt and compression tested on the lower end. I bought my boat, engines were supposed to be fresh but were not (another story),blew both motors the following summer, had to have full rebuilds, did not rebuild the blowers (hind sight sucks!) and the following summer grenaded a blower (had to rebuild the motor again!). When all was said and done, I lost $60k and a good part of two summers when I could have spent $10-20K for refreshs from a rep. engine builder! |
What Tom said! Believe me I know all to well also!!

Had 575SCi's in my TG.
Rebuild blower, top end, check intake and thermostat housing. This would be the minimum. |
I am just glad you are looking Bill!

The t stat housing corroeded closed on these motors.
Pull them, or have the surveyor pull them and take a peek |
