Any of the 1 ton trucks from Ford, Dodge or GM will tow it just fine. The problem comes from being over weight. If the truck company says you can tow 15k on a ball mount, you have to take into consideration the tongue weight, weight of the boat, full of fuel, weight of the trailer and what ever crap you have in the boat. With a Top Gun you're probably going to exceed that limit. Like I said, the truck can pull it and usually more but you also need to stop it. And if you can't stop quick enough and plow into a car full of people and seriously injure someone or kill them, you're screwed. The first thing your insurance company is going to do is look for a way out. As soon as they see you're over weight, your policy is null and void and you're on the hook for everything. They also look at the gross combined weight limit. I don't know of a truck out there right now, besides a Sportchassis that can tow all of this legally, I don't think even a 450 or 550 can. So if you think it's out of your price range, what's an accident with no insurance coverage going to cost you? Also, not sure where you are but in California, if you tow over 10k or 10500k or are even towing a trailer capable of it you have to have a class A endorsement. Most states have a similar rule. H20 Toie knows more about this than I do, but it's a big deal. That's why three of us bought the Sportchassis.

A Ford One-Ton dually had a CGVWR of 30,000# and its maximum loaded conventional-towing (on the hook) trailer weight rating is 17,500#.

I think that'll do it. Sure a sportchassis would be nice, but it's overkill when a truck like the above can and will do the job legally.

So if you are over the 26000lbs limit, what kind of driver's license to you need?

Hey just think, when you get rid of the Top Gun and step up to a 42X, you'll get to do this all over again.. :eekdrop: You'll be towing out of class for sure with a 1 ton. If you get a Sportchassis or equivalent, then you're done. Better power trains then you'll ever get with a 1 ton. You probably won't want to modify anything, like most people do with the 1 tons, including myself. After market inter cooler's, chips, exhaust systems, injectors, turbos, all ads up. And you don't have to buy one new. There's lots of great deals on used ones. I'm just speaking from experience and so is h20 toi. The 2 of us along with another friend got tired of having these same discussions and throwing away money on the smaller trucks and modifications and decided to buy Sportchassis. All of us are very happy with them and haven't looked back since.

Only on OSO will a F450/F550 not be enough to move a 38 TG, you "need" a sportchassis or F650! Let's not forget most will want/need 4x4 for those slippery ramps, so for around $100k you should be able to find a used truck to tow the flat bottom TG with! :D

Hell, you might even want to consider a full size Pete with 4wd conversion to pull such a monster! :drink:

Really?

We are not saying that a one ton won't tow it, what we are saying is that if you step up you can get a way better tow vehicle that won't cost that much more in the long run, drives better, pulls better and is just plain fun to drive. and if you ever need to tow something bigger your covered.

It just so happens that i have an F450 a Sportchassis and a Peterbilt, but when i head out to havasu next week it will be in the Sportchassis.
