Cigarette History buffs needed to settle argument :Dsed

A friend of mine purchased a classic Cigarette boat this past winter. At first I was told it was a 28, then I heard it had a single and I was confused. Finally go to see the boat and I was like "oh, 24x7 mold Martini/Corsa". This completely pissed him off. He has a title and registration that clearly states 1978 25.9 Cigarette.

So he told me this is one of just a few that Don himself hand built and put his name on. A martini Cigarette....this is what he claims?? So, tell me the history

Well for starters that name belongs on a cruiser or sailboat :lolhit:

Martini is one of the oldest names in offshore powerboating.

Someone should have some good info, but things were not as organized as they are now. (Heck, it's still not cut and dry; reference "repo molds" from being leased etc. etc.) Many folks swapped molds and laid up each other's boats way back in the day. The HIN and title process was spotty at best.

Friend of mine had a boat with the same "error" on the title, On title under Manufacturer it says Cigarette, but the H.I.N does not start with CRT so it is not a Cigarette, if the DMV or Secretary of State would cross reference the HIN to the Manuf they would of caught it, but they don't, so many boats fall through the cracks in the system.

What is the H.I.N number on your friends boat?

On another note.send me some updated pics of my old boat when you get a chance.

The HIN is MP825140M78D

Nothing new on your old boat. Its summer so the work has halted. We are in the process of rebuilding a 575sci for it however. Gonna see what that little magic rat can do with 700hp pushing it along

Wally 07-01-2013 01:44 PM

usually the HIN's start with 3 letters....and I don't think they end with letters either....there is nothing that comes up on those letters on the coastguard MIC search....but there is an MPD company...wonder if someone made a mistake and transposed the letters around?...anyway the MPD comes back to
BRUNSWICK MARINE POWER PO BOX 517/201 STARCRAFT RD TOPEKA IN

here you can search for yourself: http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/mic1.aspx

The first 3 letters of Corsa marine HIN code is MPB

Is it possible someone mistook the ''8" for a ''B''

Could be, I got the vin from a crappy cell phone pic he sent me. I just looked again zoomed in, looks like an 8 but not sure

Can anyone tell me if a boat of this size was ever a cigarette?

Heres some pics of a 1978 26' Martini. Tell your friend to calm down, take a pill, and ebay the cigarette apparel and stickers.

That 8 in MP8 is actually a B, MPB is Corsa, and is sure looks like a Corsa. :eekdrop:

I hope this friendship does not end up in the gutter over the old "I told you so". But on the other hand you always feel so good when your right.

Oh, he is heated :D I like the boat, cool classic ride....I was trying to tell him what I thought I knew, I'm no expert but...The martini is paint, the cig is a sticker.

A few actual quotes from him

"Came with thunderboat rowe key chain with Don's phone number on it"
"I checked and it was titled under Cig until 1979, just depended on who ordered them"
"Call Cig and check the numbers then"
"Don owned the hull and did a few under the Cig name is what they told me"
"First cig was a formula named cigarette"
"My hull was made for banana boat"
"it's a martini cigarette"
"Don and the banana boat guys were partners I read the books and know the whole story"
"This hull was hand laid by Don himself, not production crap like your fountain"

The last one just made me laugh out loud

That's a sweet boat for sure. The martini boats were good boats too, and probably one of the best in 1978. Just tell him to relax, he's got a 1978 26'. No need to start bashing your 38 that runs nearly 100mph.

Maybe its a 007 boat..shaken not stirred

Stormrider 07-01-2013 07:27 PM

Charlie McCarthy would know for sure, but iirc, cig never made a 26 and their 24 had 8ft beam.

The round fairing and windshield are a dead giveaway for a Martini S.

Make sure that even if he doesn't believe you, that you ALWAYS refer to it as the martini.

"Hey bud, takin the martini out this weekend?"

"Dammit it's a cigarette!!!!! And hand laid"

" nope. It's a 26ft Cosmo buddy"

The Martinis were made on NE 187th Street and were called the 7 Meter - they were actually 25' centerline with a 25 degree hull. Here is their sales brochure on the 7 Meter S model. I recently sold my 1979 SS Martini in the other pictures. Bill

Your friend has a Martini 7 meter. 25.6 single engine. Not a Cigarette, not a Don Aronow, Martini, later became Corsa. I owned this one and did the homework. It is what it is.
