1972 Cigarette Racing Team 20 ft.

I have a 1972 20 ft Cig. that I' told could be 1 0f 3 boats actually manufactured in 1971 but the HIN plate list it as a '72. It also list the boat at 20 ft but it true measures less then that. I was told that was done because of a govt. regulation that became effective in 1972 that required boats less then 20 ft to have flotation foam in the hulls and just changing the length on the HIV plate got around that requirement. This is just hearsay so any information would be greatly appreciated.

The flotation had to be positive on boats less than 20'. This is a fact. Brownie, who is on OSO sometimes, and worked at Cigarette at the time, confirmed the statement. Brownie is incredibly knowledgeable, a friend, and quite a character, he is an encyclopedia of early offshore knowledge.

Nice boat!

It's a little crazy to see that they rated the 20 cig at 500 HP from the factory. I'm dropping in 675 HP into my 20 this winter, hopefully it likes it.

What kind of power is the 540 making? And what top speed is he seeing with the jet drive? I’m looking to be a little over 90 with my setup with uses an IMCO SC drive.
