Thinking about some LED lights under it. Who makes some that will hold up?

My old boat, great memories, glad you are bringing it back to the level I had it at when I sold it years ago!

Yep, i sold it to a guy in Oklahoma city I believe. It was run on LOTO, the owner I sold it to ran the boat a lot. It got some hours put on her from what i heard. I put alot of time, money and effort into that boat. Worked out great for him, I guess then it was sold to Texas. That was a great riding boat, perfect balance, perfect setup. Something about that boat.

I used these exact LEDs to surround my engine compartment. Decent product for a really low price. I used 3m emblem double sided tape instead of the tape supplied with the role. The supplied stuff is about as sticky as the back of a 50 yr old stamp. The 3m can be found at AutoZone or on line.

I had these on my last boat trailer for three years. Not one issue. They are not flexible. They are mounted on a rigid aluminum strip and are waterproof. Two drawbacks....only come in white, and can't get anything longer than 3'.

One of my suppliers sells them and swears by them. I was impressed and got lots of compliments on them. Ran them on top of the frame behind the fenders. Worked great for night loading.

I have two friends that purchased the ones mentioned above. Pros=come in multiple colors, long lengths available, flexible. Cons=not a matter of if they will fail, more a matter of when. Both sets I helped install had at least one section not working when they came in. Additional sections just go out over time. We all make fun of them now when we load the boats at night and call them morse code lighting due to all of the sections not working in random spots.

Kind of a get what you pay for deal.

I'll be ordering another set of the lights in the link I posted for the new Bullet trailer in short order.

Dumb question, what has most used to power them up? The vehicle battery?

cigrocket 05-16-2014 08:02 AM

I ran a switch in the truck when I did it. I had a quick disconnect at the same location where my trailer connection for lights/brakes is. That way I could turn them on from inside the cab. Makes for loading the trailer great at night, especially if your launch doesn't have great lighting. You can see them under water really well.

All three sets I've done were powered by the parking lights on the trailer. I saw no reason to have a separate circuit. Two sets were amber therefore they are less likely to be an issue with law enforcement. One set was white. While not legal under the letter of the law, they weren't an extravagant color that drew the attention of law enforcement either.

All three sets are on anytime the running lights are on while running down the road.

That trailer upgrade looks great. The trailer that I had on the boat was a prestige and it wasn't very good. It was designed for a Formula, and it was just never right. It came with the boat, and I never really traveled alot with the boat. It did its job, but your new trailer looks GREAT

Here is a good link, most wire directly to the parking lights and then have a waterproof switch on the tongue of the trailer.

Thanks for the input. I think I may have something to add to the to-do list. That link had some good ideas in it.

The trailer looks great. I am liking the new trend of metal bunks with a wood and/or plastic cap on them.

However, if it were me; I would add some front V-bunks to that trailer.
Why?
1) The winch/bow stand up front too much of a focus point to hold all that weight forward of the V-bunks.
2) The V-bunks are going to help you hit the the trailer centered and into the winch stand when loading in a breeze and/or current.
3) I see that you have some PVC guides, but they are really only there to keep you from hitting the trailer cross members when loading.
4) That trailer is going to flex, and you will want a lot more hull support when it does flex vs. having it bounce up and down on the winch stand alone.
5) V-bunks in the front 1/2 half of the trailer will help you load. V-bunks on the back half will make sure it centers as you come up the ramp.

If you have difficulty loading it with the current way it's setup, the V-bunks will help.
