Carpe Diem take 2
First winter I had the boat I put on 2" spacers in hopes of avoiding the 5000rpm burnout to get on plane .. long story short , spacers never really helped, planing is ALL in the cupping of the props and prop rotation.
This weekend I finally got rid of the spacers in hopes of more speed and rpm (could only turn 5300rpm) I also wanted to make sure AFRs were good to go. At the same time swapped lowers to turn the props IN. So left the family at home and with 2 new 02`s , the Mild Thunder man and his notebook , a box of jets, and the Go Pro we headed to the river. Results were good, Very Humid air and 80* AFRs low 11`s to high 10`s Gets up on plane at 3200 no problem Acceleration even at 5000rpm is pretty sweet! No more enemic turd Intake temps under the blower 140-150* (no intercooler ) 6psi @ WOT 4% underdriven 100 gallons of fuel Speed improved by 4-5 mph (84ish) on dead flat water. Almost 6000rpm on port 5800ish starboard. Second year with boat I`m pretty happy with that , on the lake with some chop she should scoot pretty good.:daz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3zQvghTrf0&feature=youtu.be |
very cool . what drives are you running on that boat ?
|
Heres my novice question.... Whats the smoke coming off the port engine? Just a breather on the valve cover?
|
Yeah....what does a guy do for a living to drive a boat like that. Lol sounds bad ass man!
|
Nice Job!! Glad to see that hard work paying off for you.
|
A little data
3000RPM = 12.0 AFR. 1" vacuum. 48mph Intake air temp 140* 3500RPM= 12.0 AFR 1psi boost. 52mph 130* intake air temp 4000RPM= 11.8 AFR 2psi boost. 62MPH 130* intake air temp 4500RPM = 11.5 AFR 4psi boost 69mph 135* intake air temp 5000RPM = 10.9 AFR 6psi boost 76mph 135* intake air temp. WOT = blew pen out of my hand. I dont have to tell you cig guys, this boat needs chop. Temp today was about 83*, but humidity was around 80% on down along that river corridor. Should wake up a bit on the big lake with better air and some chop to get that old hull loose. IMO, with air intake temps about 50* hotter than ambient at full tilt, I question the gains an intercooler would offer on this low boost setup. |

What props again? (I may have missed it, I can't read) Mercury labbed 173/4 x 28 4 blades. If I were to set that boat up it would still be higher, Id like to be running top speed with drives level , right now that was 80mph and 5300rpm. Had to go all the way to 8 on the trim to get the rpms up and gain speed. That tells me still a bit too deep but I`m fine with it as is. I realize the steam coming out of the breather could possibly be the condensation in the oil or possibly I haven`t gotten all the water after the intake gasket leak. To that one dude that keeps talking $hit about the progress of this boat , and all he took away is that the oil might be getting too hot lets get something straight. This is the $hit I started with: 1. Leaking oils pans 2. Incorrect block plugs 3. Incorrect trans cooler routing 4. Incorrect bellhousing dowels 5. Incorrect dampener plate 6. Incorrect exhaust heads studs 7. Incorrect rocker aligment 8. Secondary powervalves 9. 8470 rod bolts 10. Oil pan crushed by race plate and rubbing thru. 11. Oil pan bolts too long, two locks washers used 12. Incorrect valve cover bolts 13. 1994 and 1999 distributers, one automotive one marine. 14. Straight 50 weight oil too thick for lifters per manufacturer causing oiling issues. Valve train: 1. Springs sitting on shims not locators or springs cups eating up shims. 2. 155lbs spring pressure insufficient for lifters and set up. 3. No back cutting on valves. 4. Incorrect rocker alignment caused side loading of intake rocker guides. 5. Leakage between cylinders 6. Wrong spark plugs causing timing retard and sky rocketing the EGt`s 7. Timing so retarded EGT`s so high valve almost burned up. 8. Harmonics of valvetrain so bad the inner spring dampner was eating away at the valve seal. 9. At least one exhaust valve hanging up per side due to the high EGT`s. 15. Bellhousing cooler bolts too short only engage 1/3” 16, Leaking headers I got this boat with busted drives, couldnt get on plane for $hit, AFRs in the 9`s , took 5 minutes to get to 70mph and at the end of season both motors almost were "5 minutes away from disaster" per High Flow Heads. Me and Joe fixed all that mess and she keeps getting better every year. Its been a long road but I tried to be the bigger man and shake the mans hand who handed me this mess and I got snuffed. ok thats fine. See I can talk $hit too. |
God damn!! Think I'm hard. Great video!! That's bad ass for the bayou!! ;)
|
I feel your pain brother!!! We are fixing the last of the jerry rig off my boat this year... Old girl will be better than new for next season!!
Im still good friends with the owner that sold me this mess lol! We actually started investing together this year and im making a few extra $$ from it!! Its all good we wouldnt own these things if we didnt enjoy making them perfect again!! |
Nice work, someone should set up a Great Lakes Cig get together next year..... Put In Bay / Kellys?

It's amazing the hack work out there I bought a scarab to get the engines I got, I knew the builder wasn't great but I basically got 600 hp 547's for free in the end, but I redid heads right away the valves were just cheap stainless and the guides were shot, valve grind sucked... I am dealing with blow by issues still I can't wait to refresh the shortblocks and fix that too... I don't trust anyone but a few and do my own work besides machining ... A guy with a fountain over te weekend came from michigan and found out when he had his oil changed they didn't drain the engines just added to both he had 16 qts in each engine!! Don't trust others
Well one thing I`ll say is I love the paint job, good thing it was MitcherT who did it. |
Looking good brotha!!
I heard a rumor we might see your face at the shootout.... Any truth to that!! |

Pete, I can get you some pics if youd like. What Joe posted above is what I was shooting for .. N/A you can run on the leaner side of those numbers. Mike P, I`ll bring your jumper down with me. |
Very cool videos What kind of Go Pro did you shoot it with? The sound is very clean. Also what did you do to light up the engine compartment or is that just ambient light coming thru your engine hatch?
