How to tell if a 38 flatdeck is a KV

So I'm seriously interested in a 1984 Cig flatdeck, I'm assuming it is an SE, but were all SEs KVs also?? I know the scarab KVs said KEVLAR on the transom below the HIN, is this true for Cigs as well?

jeff32 10-14-2014 05:43 PM

Ive read that there is very little kevlar in the kv edition... More like couple stringers were made of reenforced with kevlar...
That kind of stayed in my mind that it is not something that is very worth something more than a regular scarab...

But i may be wrong!!!

zombiescustoms 10-14-2014 05:49 PM

I'm talking about a Cigarette, I know the scarabs were marked on the transom

rb41 10-14-2014 07:19 PM

if you ordered optional power and ssm#3 drives you got kevlar automaticaly if it came with trs you didnt

cigboat1 10-14-2014 07:24 PM

:cool-smiley-011:Scarabs were NEVER marked with Kevlar on the transom !! The Kevlar 49 emblems were put on the port and starboard sides of the boats right behind the front seats and the left rear upper deck across from the Wellcraft emblem.... Dupont had a special deal with Wellcraft to advertise their products and as far as just stringers the product was a special order and the cost was some where between $2300 and $3800 depending on the boat...that was a lot of money in the day and was special order only . If you saw it on the transom some one put it there..........Also the boats were lighter and stronger than the stock boats.

Sorry, my fault!

From what I have been able to tell the Kevlar Cigs do not have the extra reinforcements in the engine compartments or under the seats in the cabin. If you hit a Kevlar Cig on the hull it will move more then a glass one.
They are definetly a lot lighter. When sitting in the water side by side the Kevlar boat will be a couple inches higher out of the water. Kevlar was marketed to be stronger there a lighter layup.

See in the picture how much higher Fox Hunter (Kevlar) sits then mine fiberglass

Maybe if you got the 3 sheep out of the cabin, you'd shed a few lbs. I heard those little guys are heavy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D18J0p407ls

Mark I must have an odd ball flat deck . Mine is a 1985 Kevlar boat but it does have the extra reinforcements in the bilge . Go figure .

Only for sure way I've found is looking under the dash for the goldish color and Kevlar specific weave under the dash.
And cigs were never refferes to as "kv" that was scarab specific.

zombiescustoms 10-18-2014 02:50 PM

And the KV in a KV scarab means "kaama version" and has nothing to do with kevlar, so I have been informed.

Team Archer 10-18-2014 03:35 PM

The KV stood for KAAMA version on SCARABS not Cigs had nothing to do with kevlar

zombiescustoms 10-18-2014 03:48 PM

I think I'm having Déjà vu?

zombiescustoms 10-19-2014 03:31 PM

So after digging around in the flatdeck that im intrested in , I dont see the reinforcements in the bilge and I peeled the liner back under the dash and it is very yellowish gold in there, might be a kevlar hull?

jeff32 10-19-2014 05:29 PM

any fiberglass is yellowish? no?
unless kevlar is really different?

zombiescustoms 10-19-2014 05:32 PM

Yes the structure is yellow and an odd looking weave, should have taken a pic, but it never dawned on me till I was told about the bilge bracing, or lack thereof in a kevlar hulled Cig

Rick G 10-19-2014 07:42 PM

No regular glass wet out in polyester or vynilester resin will have a pinkish color . Kevlar is yellow gold in color . I would venture a guess that the flat deck you are looking at is a Kevlar hull .
RG.

zombiescustoms 10-20-2014 12:17 PM

But...does this make it any more desirable? worth any more?? I would assume yes, but I am not familiar with Kevlar hulled boats.

Unlimited jd 10-20-2014 12:22 PM

Maybe a little more desirable, somewhat stiffer supposedly, and def lighter.

Rick G 10-20-2014 02:02 PM

Definately more disirable as lil Red said lighter , stronger and a little stiffer . And we know stiffer is always better . I have a kevlar Flat deck and compared to my other off shores an excellant hull . You will not go wrong witha a kevlar flat deck .

The only confusion is that it is running TRS drives, I was told that the Kevlar boats all came with speedmasters, all things aside, I think I will pull the trigger, if it is Kevlar, bonus, if not no big deal.

tom rockstroh 10-21-2014 11:33 AM

I would buy the boat,I,ve seen it and looks good. As far as weight is concerned and construction I don't think any thought was given to being sure that each boat built was within a "Weight Spec" especially those early 38's. Remember most of those early boats were powered ( especially TRS Boats ) by Merc 400's with Cleaver props........Maybe a 55 MPH top speed. Later with Hawk 540's and prop technowlogy things got more attn in the build. The only advise I would give is to check the boat out for a Hook.
