Mistress repower #2 begins....

As most know I repowered the Mistress 2 years ago, bought a boat to get the engines and it turned out to be a nightmare.....

So.... today I ordered my NEW Dart blocks, and Eagle rotating assemblys for both, will be 540CI all machinework done at Victory Engines in Cleveland, great guys! they never let me down... ever...

I will post pics and info along the way, with the help of my best buddy Scott (Lake Effect) and guys like Joe (Mild Thunder) all issues will be addressed and hope to have new reliable 650-700 hp when I am done...

boat ran 73.4 with 600 hp and TRS so lets see what happens!!

Thanks bud!!

jeff32 12-05-2014 07:34 PM

what is your estimated budget on the build?

well, from what I have figured so far...

blocks and rotating assembly's includes file fit rings, Clevite bearings, ARP2000 rod bolts 7600 for both

about 1000 each engine for machining and cleaning, setting clearances and all that...

I need to buy cams working on maybe a nice used set from Mild Thunders buddy ( nearly identical engines)

Morel lifters...550?? x2
oil pans 4-600. X2...
gaskets, oil and BS who knows 1000.00 for all that

heads were done last year, will most likely need better springs for new cams, so whatever springs are I can install them.

Honestly I figure 15,000.00 for both give or take, I would like to dyno them if I can also... so we will see...

abmotorman 12-05-2014 07:54 PM

Are your sure ARP 2000 rod bolts? Sorry, couldn't help myself. :lolhit:

Just curious what the joke is with the bolts? Joe @ Fast Forward Race Engines has built 3,500 hp BBC with ARP 2000 bolts... The rod bolt is not your problem if its broke lol

caseyh 12-05-2014 10:40 PM

Sounds like a nice set of motors! Good luck with the repower. Up greading the trans also?

I have never had a motor come apart when using good old Ace Hardware grade 8 bolts for the rods...

But then again I have never put a motor together with Ace Harware bolts.........

mmb 12-06-2014 12:06 AM

Must be a joke I don't get...

Good luck with the build!

if I can I will be going 10 disc, I may have to run the 7 disc for another season, they are fresh and didnt have any issues behind the 600's I will at least have a spare and my buddy does them for me so if I smoke one it isn't a huge problem..it all depends on money available, I don't use credit for boating

Something went on with rod bolts in another thread, I saw a little of it, but then was deleted...

yschmidt 12-06-2014 07:46 AM

I have a pair of cams out of some 540's with about 20 or so hours on them. Spec'd by an engine builder.

Good luck but out of curiosity why not go for more power considering you are going through this much work?

My heads will limit power, I really don't wanna put more HP then 700 to TRS in a Mistress, I expect to have some issues as it is, more power is just more issues, I want some kinda of faith in running it hard, I am not easy on my boat at all...

Drake22.250 12-06-2014 10:57 AM

Good luck with the build Tim, my top guns at XT's right now. Was gonna just fix some stitching! You know where it goes from there.

Full Force 12-06-2014 11:49 AM

Thanks bud!! Yea XT is slammed this year I had to store my Mistress sonewhere else lol

Makes sense now! You made a good choice with the ARP 2000 Rod Bolts for your build.

My machinist is giving me for 10% over cost because I known him 20 years and he hooks me up, 2 blocks, and eagle rotating, with bearings and rings for 7600, it will be another 1000 each to machine and balance, set clearances and all that, I will assemble so I save there...

Shoot me your email - I can send the scans of the cam cards. You saw my motors at Gellner's when he was building them 540 - 675HP.
My heads were 308 Dart iron eagle.

tommymonza 12-09-2014 08:33 AM

So the power limit to this combination is your heads ? What is the most HP you can get out of a 540 natural on pump gas ?

In my case heads will limit me to 650-675 I think tops...I seen 540's make 700-725 with right parts

tommymonza 12-09-2014 09:34 AM

What would it take to upgrade to blowers on this package other than changing the cams would you have to put in different pistons too? What kind of power with a mild boost you think?

Mild boost, 540ci, decent heads, right cam, right blower, 800-850HP on a modest setup. Problem is his drives.

Unlimited jd 12-09-2014 07:18 PM

And I believe they would blow his budget out. There's already one broke cheap a$$ trying to find a pair of inexpensive boost makers around here..... ;)
