2000 Top gun T/S Restore

9 Attachment(s)
For those wondering what happened to that T/S on Ebay in NJ, you know the one. The one with rebuilt engines all ready to go, owned by an older gentleman, checked out by mechanic, so that would mean it was well taken care of..........You know the boat we have all at least bought 1 similar cream puff.

I pretty much figured this is how this would end up.

Well this minor little restore is under way...3rd boat in 3 years. This one is pretty much a complete restore everything being replaced. I am done after this boat is complete for at least 2 seasons, well unless I can find an abused 39 that needs some love.
Most of boat will be new by the time spring rolls around.

I am still always amazed that people spend this much money on their boats and do not take care of

Where to start.
Engines, they were on there last ride, would have been lucky to make it threw a month of boating, they are at the builder now, building engines so that they are capable of handling Whipples, I will be running stock for this upcoming season.Low 80's will be fast enough for me for at least this season.
New paint, Mitcher T this is scheduled for 2nd week in January
New transom assemblies.
Replace all cables hoses ect.
New dash
New interior
Pump out head
Possibly finishing front half of cabin.
Before pics and tear down pics attached will post pics as build moves along.

I am thinking about this paint scheme, I am not done choosing the colors but I do like this a lot. Of course it has greys in it.

SkaterMike82 12-16-2014 12:41 PM

FYI there's a 39 that needs love and has Arneson drives. Someone post it on the General Discussion.

Thanks, I saw that,I probably would be all over that BUT seeing how my cash is tied up in this thing I am stuck finishing this one. I am curious who has seen that 39 in person and the actual condition of the boat.

Good luck with the resto and the concept paint looks awesome!

This fellow did. I'm assuming.

Congrats and good luck, sounds like you have your work cut out for you this winter. 500efi's for power? I would be careful putting any weight up in the front cabin. There's a reason cigarette left that unfinished and I don't think you want the bow riding any lower in the water. Once again congrats and look forward to seeing the progress this winter.

Thank you. Yes they are 500's. As far as the cabin up front I have been trying to get all the info I can on this, and I have pretty much read all I can find. It seems so many of the newer ones are finished up front, so I really cannot seem to get a straight answer on if it is a good idea or bad.

jbraun2828 12-16-2014 03:21 PM

Do you have any pics of your cabin? None of the newer ones are finished all the way to the bow, some have beds some don't. Mine has a bed and about last 5-6ft is unfinished. Also one upgrade that is a must is a wind screen, the difference is night and day compared to those flaps and I think they look better. I see your interior is out, how hard is it to get side cockpit panels out? I'm going to put some speakers in but don't want to wreck existing panels.

All I really want to do is add the bed, just in case we need a place to crash, not all the way to the bow. Right now I just have the 2 benches on either side.

I was just reading about the windscreen and just added it to the list thanks.

As far as the side panels coming out it is really easy they are just held in with Christmas trees, only problem will be if they break like some of mine did you will have to peel back vinyl to install new ones, which would not be to difficult either.

The auction one? I looked at that when I was down for the races, it sold for I think $41,500 I tried to buy but I do not believe National Liquidators would have let that happen.

PM sent thank you. I think I know who you are referring to in fox lake, that is NOT who I am using. Mason from Skunk Works now builds my engines, he knows his chit, Mason is the only guy I let work on my boat other than myself.
I am pretty picky who I let work on my toys.

does not look like an abused boat with those pictures!

but will sure look better with the paint scheme you showcased!

keep posting pictures!

COOPS 12-16-2014 09:57 PM

Looking forward to seeing it on the water. Great choice on the graphics.
Power source cost me a motor a few years ago. Never again.

I guess your right, not really abused, just more neglected it is all the little things that show lack of maintenance.

Picking paint for this thing is stressful, I ask everybody what they like and everybody seems to have a different opinion.

FIXX, what inserts are you talking about? I am starting to redo my interior as well and am about to start a new thread of the steps. I have an 04 Gun, it has an material that is not leather and not exactly vinyl. To be honest I'm not sure what material it is, however it is very soft. Thanks for posting this yammi it is going to be a big help.

Is it super soft?? If it is, it might be ulta suede. That is what is in my Playboy TS

Full Force 12-17-2014 10:00 AM

Looks like fun!! love the paint ideas.... blue ALWAYS looks sweet!

I would think adding a bed in cabin would not be an issue, how much weight can it be? 50lbs? I can tell a difference with my water tank full or empty in my sled, but nothing critical...

The only opinion that matters on paint is yours.......

LOL, of course, Only two years and she could be yours. He is changing paint design a little more for me, trying to get more solid colors and change deck design, well and of course some more grey in there.

ICDEDPPL 12-17-2014 04:23 PM

I`d go dark grey interior and as much gray on the outside as possible.
Just remember to keep some vitamin D and Prozac in the cabin.

Did the boat really need to be totally redone or are you a perfectionist. It doesn't look that bad but pictures are not always a sure thing. Been there.

Pictures look way better than actual condition. I am a little bit perfectionist true but it was time, boat showed its age, engines would not have made it no way. There is some pretty bad dock rash on the side approx 6' long that needed to be repaired, clear coat all peeled and worn off.
Interior, I tried cleaning just was not happening. I did not want to do things half azzed so I just decided to do whole thing right. Also I enjoy tearing the boat apart.

I've had the tires kicked completely off this thing, been told its priced right, its priced to low, very clean, I don't get it, good luck with your's

I like the blue better myself, it will look pisser on the water.

As for Gordon's gun, I have driven the boat, it is the real deal and it is fantastic. What an incredible piece of machinery.

This boat looks pretty nice to me and can't beat the price either would be a shame to part out.

I am not planning on painting this boat grey, I was just putting it up. I am liking the blue colors with new white interior and all new gauges and dash. Just trying to tie it all together is the difficult part.

Yes super soft, my wife loves it, however it has worn places on it.. The guy who owned it before me didn't take of it. Have you had that problem with it wearing on edges? I trying to decide if to go back with the same.
