I've had 5 customers in the last 2 years turn down beautiful boats because they did not have Mercury power. And in my opinion the boats they bought were borderline under powered but the motors were blue and that's all they would buy. And paid more for!

Wasn't me!!!!

People around here are generally much more conservative. And,for good reason. With our very short season, they will sacrifice power for reliability. Anyone can repair a blue motor and parts are easily accessible. A Zul or Chief motor and the unknown scares them. BTW, I had a pair of 700 Zuls in a 40 Fountain and they were every bit as reliable as Mercury. But, to the average boater, Merc is the safe way to go.

Alot of truth in that statement.

Also, it's like buying a stock diesel truck versus one that has exhaust and tuner, etc. Sometimes the stock unit is more desirable because it is a known quantity. / unmolested.
