Can TG be documented?

Does a 38 Top Gun meet the requirements for Coast Guard documentation?

Interceptor 01-06-2017 09:30 PM

Yes.

Sydwayz 01-06-2017 09:54 PM

Absolutely you can.

Totally separate...
IF you plan to deem it as a second home for a loan interest tax write off; there are separate requirements to meet; which you may be thinking of.

BMBoyer 01-07-2017 12:18 AM

It really does not take much to qualify for documentation. Better question is what does not qualify.

cigrocket 01-07-2017 05:52 AM

My playboy is! No problem

seafordguy 01-07-2017 06:37 AM

Not sure how you got charged that unless you went to a document service agency. Then they are taking your money. If you go to the website fill out the paper work, submit it. The initial cost was about $125.00 and then it cost 25 a year to renew. Easy to do.

In some states, like Missouri, you don't pay sales tax on a boat when documented. You pay an in lieu tax and the $450 you spend by doing using a service can save you thousands depending on the purchase price of the boat.

Sydwayz 01-07-2017 09:41 AM

It doesn't cost $450 bucks. You can do it yourself, and not pay someone to do it.

There are advantages to being documented vs. state registered; but it all depends on what state you are in, and how vain you are (to want stickers on your bow or not). I tried to document my Mini-Hawk, but alas, it was too small.

Is my vessel large enough to Coast Guard document?
In basic terms, a vessel must measure in volume at a minimum of five net tons. Depending the length beam, and overall depth, most vessels will need to be at least approximately 25 feet in length to qualify. Vessel tonnage is determined by a measurement process rather than by calculating the vessel's weight or displacement.

Buddies old TG was documented and I watched a young DNR officer hassle him at the boat launch. Seem like it may cause more grief if you had a few Drinks in you. Just my opinion.

dave krehbiel 01-07-2017 09:54 AM

Still in the process of getting my Tiger documented and it is fairly easy but it as anything to do with the Government, it takes a while. In Iowa they are making me document it before I can even register it here, so don't worry Ed I am in the process of getting it put in my name instead of Big Thunder, LOL.

The Navy prefer Top Guns and Apaches at time of war.....

“The National Vessel Documentation Center facilitates maritime commerce and the availability of financing while protecting economic privileges of United States citizens through the enforcement of regulations, and provides a register of vessels available in time of war or emergency to defend and protect the United States of America.

BEWARE: The Navy prefer Top Guns and Apaches at time of war.....

No hurry on my end, but wish it would warm up!

Not sure I understand the question, taken by who? If your doing it yourself you pay the USCG directly. I haven't done a bunch, I've did mine because I was too cheap to pay to have it done! Took forever and came back once. I did do it for Harley on your new boat, but it was just a transfer to him from Chad and pretty easy. The rest I send to Barb in our office and she does them in house.

F-2 Speedy 01-07-2017 10:45 AM

Did I pay the correct amount ? I'll see you @ the OP boat show

That site is not through the USCG. It is a third party site. Really misleading. I would say you paid a third party company an extra $325 vs going to the USCG directly to do it. Total cost to me was $104 with mortgage paper work filed too. So yeah, if you didn't do it with the dealer then you got screwed on cost but outcome should be the same.

dave krehbiel 01-07-2017 12:08 PM

Thought you all might like to see how slow our government is on processing these. So maybe in 4 months, I may receive my documentation documents. I guess I will be illegal on the water til then. Just waiting for the little paper to arrive in the mail that says Documents received for processing so I can take her out on the first nice day.

Not the right place. It is the third party site. I almost did this through them and then backed out when they told me the fee. This is the USCG Link.

to do it your self.

I registered my new one in June, still waiting on registration. Be ready for a slow process but it is worth it.

You should call to check on it. Says the new applications are up to September 2016 as completed. Maybe lost in the mail?

I have called so many times that I know the number by heart. They said that it is in the system but have no way other than checking the work packet online to see where it is at in the Q. I did have to send in a copy of the bill of sale in September because they could not find it and it pushed it to the back of the line. I am going to call again Monday.

On another note, unless you are storing your boat in Kansas I would sure as hell register it to the Missouri address (if that is where it is stored, docked and used primarily). Personal property tax in MO is 1/3rd that of KS. If it is primarily used and stored in MO that is where it should be registered anyway. You don't need a residence if your renting a slip or storage in MO and MO will mail renewals to another mailing address.

If you do move it to MO MAKE SURE YOU MOVE THE TRAILER TOO. Otherwise KS will come looking for the boat. Don't ask how I know.

F-2 Speedy 01-09-2017 01:57 PM

LOL, its all registered at my lake address in MO.
