I owned Sean's old boat. It has since moved on to an owner in New York and it is currently not for sale. That boat you posted has been for sale for a couple of years on and off. I was going to inquire on it but the boat I bought came up instead.

I figured out it was a different one, I was poking at Cafe's but the wife wants to hold out for a gun or keep what we have and move forward...

frickstyle 08-07-2017 07:04 AM

Tim,
I may know of a Gun for sale..... Possibly out of your price range tho.... But look at it this way, it's all done, well, except for the fact it only runs 5% of the season.

ugh... dude let's get it back together and enjoy, the last issue wasn't really anything but horrible luck...

MILD THUNDER 08-07-2017 08:56 AM

Now what happened !?

frickstyle 08-07-2017 01:17 PM

Busted a timing chain shortly after we spoke on the phone about drive setup, probably that weekend, touched a valve and had to take the engine apart again. I have 4 hours on a "new" engine and I pretty much shot most of the season away, again. Lovely thing this is they call boating, when do we get to actually "go boating"?

This one isn't on the engine builder, just a **** part, but hey why not with all the other challenges on this one.

donzi matt 08-07-2017 03:27 PM

How the hell does a timing chain just break? I'm sure everything in these motors is high end, that is definitely a weird one. And I thought I was cursed.

1989mach1 08-07-2017 06:15 PM

I may be looking at a nouther boat this weekend...that way when Justin and tim brake I will have a spare one to rent out

ICDEDPPL 08-07-2017 11:17 PM

A timing chain doesn`t just break, I had an adjustable that got loose , advanced itself and broke the dowel on the cam. (that was fun drilling out)
Still didn`t break or hurt anything . I only found it by accident , probably ran half the summer like that

So.... your builder sucks, sorry to hear .

SHHHH!! so far been ok, at 98 hours on my builds.... drives that's a different discussion lol

I have no clue also how a timing chain just breaks, I wonder how that happened myself, I hope Justin is fixed up soon and can get more time, still got 3 months left of boating still.. the thing that sucks is none of the issues he has had are "big power" issues, been all BS fails.... I feel horrible for him as I know the feeling too well.

How does a t-chain break - never seen it? Mis-alignment ? Cam button clearance not set right ? Wrong length chain ? Not getting oiled somehow ?

frickstyle 08-08-2017 06:57 AM

^^^Good point(s), going to have the chain examined at a lab to see if it was faulty material, or...?

Quinlan 08-08-2017 07:55 AM

I am doing 2 rebuilds right now because the rollers on about 4 inches of chain all came off and were spread through out the valley and pan. A few even made it up into the valve covers. How the He!!???
Luckily we caught it when installing new blowers or we could have had a real Booom situation. Suks AZz but we are in reassembly mode now, so hopefully splash by Labor day

MILD THUNDER 08-08-2017 08:27 AM

What kind of chains are you guys running that are having these failures ?

Frick, was it a billet set ? What broke on it?

I would think a new engine with 10 hours that suffered a failed timing chain , is likely due to builder error. Alignment issue, oiling issue, engine misfiring repeatingly, etc.

frickstyle 08-08-2017 09:07 AM

Right, it's very weird. I'm going to take it to a lab to have it examined. the links "pulled" apart at one set of pins, links broke, no material went into the pan, just fell down and got collected in the cover. End play on the cam is good.

It was a billet set, double rollers, Comp Cams Rolland chain. Moving to a Cloyes.

I am wondering if anyone else had a problem with these chains in the last year? Might be mfg defect or they switched chain/link suppliers?

RSCHAP1 08-08-2017 12:28 PM

Many years ago...
I had replaced the timing chain on my Firebird.
Two days later it came apart.
Went back to parts store and counter guys tell me that when bored they would look through boxes of parts.
NOW they tell me that many many times they saw timing sets with no master link in the chain.
Of course I was furious and wondered why they would not say something or check after they learned this to help avoid failure in an engine.
But lesson learned.
So if it remains a mystery maybe a manufacturing or assembly defect, it has happened.
