38s with #6s
I'm curious how well a 38 handles #6s and a little power with the side by side setup?
|
Morning Smoke (black and red from NJ) was a bad ass machine |
Yeah we did a handful of FPC runs with him. I believe it had Cobra power in the 1200 range. I guess I couldn't keep up to see how it handled. lol
|
I rode on Mitch's 38 800N/A converted to #6s and it rides amazing at 100mph, fun, fast, stable and eats the rough. (White with red and blue American flag)
Also rode many times on and drove Dan's 38 (purple) 900 Sterling's and 6s from the factory and it runs amazing and is a blast in the rough water. He did add spacers to the drives but his engines and drives were mounted extremely high, and the blower hatch is super heavy so yeah maybe at 120 it might have not been the best but it also had the original props on it from day one. I believe that boat could be dialed in to run even better but at 105mph its awesome. I have video Kristy still needs nto edit that shows how badazz his boat was! I really can't say enough good about the 38s with 6s, and just remember prop technology has advanced and knowledge of how to set up boats better with more time so if you did happen to buy something I feel confident you could make it run 100+ on rails with a little dialing in. |
Check out Kyle Lewis video on Facebook from riding with me this weekend in Hot For Teacher. 38 TG with big power & #6s handle amazing. |
check out zeropatience's (Jim Kirk) threads on the conversion he and a friend did on his friends boat Peer Pressure 90 MPH model from #5s to #6s.....
|
Thanks for the replies and yeah I've always been a fan of Hot for Teacher

What does Morning Smoke have for power?

I’ve got a 91 with 1000 Mercs n sixes on 12” boxes and it handles like a dream |
#6a dry sumps are the real deal on any Top Gun. Period. Handles excellent, does not break, runs rough way beyond the drivers capabilities, and ... looks cool.. The props are expensive, but worth it, when you get the right ones.( that’s an expensive path). I enjoyed making the conversion on both boats. My only complaint, is all the money and time I wasted on the other drives. |
The newer 38's were not designed or engineered for big power. This comes directly from the people that engineered and built the boats. The 39 Unlimited on the other hand was. This is one of the reasons the 39 has twin fuel tanks and staggered engines.

That is the boat that prompted my question but after realizing which boat that is and it's Cobra history I think I'll continue browsing. The boat was a beast when Joe had it with the +or- 1200s but I would have concerns about it today.

Don't get me wrong I love the 38. It has more cockpit room than the 39 or 42X and looks awesome. If big power and speed is the objective this is the compromise. When you move to the turbo motors the only way to get a 20" stagger (full stagger) is move to the 42X or 50'. Loved the 39 Unlimited but moving to the new turbo power meant a max 26" stagger and higher CG.
I will say that after owning both a 39 and 42 the 42X without question handles the best. |
I agree 100%. Owned a 42X with 1200’s and it could def handle the power. Probably my favorite boat out of all the boats I’ve owned.

The 2004 "purple" Cigarette mentioned above was my boat that I ordered new from the factory. Had twin Sterling 900s and #6s. First time in the water the Cigarette crew was skeptical taking it out so they had Johnny T. test drive it. There was a total of three of us on the boat and at 108 mph Johnny throttled back and said that's as fast as this boat should ever go. Also, the motors were a major pain in the ass so I traded the boat in only four months after taking delivery of it. Ordered a 42X with 1075s and absolutely loved that boat.
