Opinions on my Cig
ive got a very early classic 35 mistress. It is well preserved and quite original. The early ones are quite cool boats. They have the black windscreen triple hatches and the full teak/ mahogany interior. It’s been re repowered with 502s but aside from that the dash paint and interior are all original... . I can’t decide whether to update the paint and colour scheme to something more classy but tasteful not flames tribal etc,, think more “playboy” or just leave as is. Although the stripes are classic it is very dated. These “series 1” boats from the 70s are rare think maybe 4 or 5 still around. Jim in Michigan has one which I looked at and he restored beautifully... it also has just the chrome sticks that have gear and power in one. Is that standard or was there an option? |
Sounds like a cool old school boat. Some will say modern graphics destroy the integrity of it's pedigree but I think most will say go for it. If the boat was a dedicated 'one of' collectors piece or ex race boat with a long history it might be different. Do it tastefully and like you say, avoid the garish tribal stuff or anything overdone. No reason why an older boat can't have a stylish paint job that doesn't detract from what's under the surface. Timeless colors, a couple of accent stripes that accentuate the length and you're good to go. Just my opinion......... post up pics if you go ahead. :) RR . |
Let’s see some pics! My early vote would keep it original.... |

I prefer old school in the older boats, they just do not look right "updated" and many go too far, to me less is more... This is about as updated I would go personally... |
Timeless look ^^^^ Today, Tomorrow and 5 or 10 years from now it still will be clean, classy and grabs your attention.
|
Less is best. Keep it old school. Simple is the way to go as the lines of the boat speak for themself. |

Another vote for, Less is more. :worthless_without_p

In car and motorcycle circles on note worthy models the real patina from years of use sells. I'd stay with what paint scheme it has or redo the original. Flames, typhoon swirls or some dumb action theme on a historic boat leads to depreciated value. ed

This is all I have right now will dig up some proper ones when I get a minute.
|
Thats a beauty! Don't change a thing...its perfect.

Very nice looking boat but you asked for opinions....... Looks like I'm in the minority but I'd still update it. Something traditional, maybe paint the hull and add similar stripes to original and matching deck stripes..? None of this really matters because the only person you have to please is yourself. Play on a computer with some colors, search google Images for Cigarette boats and get some ideas. Ask yourself if YOU would have any more pride or enjoyment running the boat with new colors and there's your answer. :) Please keep us posted. RR . |
Im a crayola crazy type of guy so... i vote full update! |
Resto-mod = A tip of the hat to the vintage flair done with modern mechanicals, supplies, and techniques.
|
I don't see anything wrong with painting it. Maybe even consider solid white.

One of the most famous Cigarette 35 race boats is, of course, Carlo Bonomi's 1974 Dry Martini. With legend Ritchie Powers throttling, it won the World Offshore Championship in 1974, Mr. Powers' 2nd World title. It was the 3rd Cigarette 35 made. Due to its success at Cowes in the classic class for several years now, last year with Mr. Powers back in it after over 40 years, its looks personifies offshore racing in the 70's, especially in Europe. Your 35 Mistress has got the Martini Racing Team's colors and with an addition of another thin stripe or two would be perfect. However, most people like to keep things original and I find Your Mistress eternally stunning as she is!

Your boat is perfect the way it is, don't change a thing.
|
Perfect as is....

I'd say backdate everything that's been updated besides the mechanicals: the mechanicals I'd further update, maybe some whipples, look for original switchgear etc etc, back to original polished throttles, go over all the wood to a mirror finish, refresh the paint, gelcoat. Maybe add some trick hidden modern appointments. Going back to original gets harder with every passing day; updating is easy..

The nicest Mistress I've every seen was Bob Schaefer's boat. I looked at buying it, went with a Café instead. Should have bought it. |
R&B.....What year is that Mistress?...My '82 is almost Identical in appointments!
|
In my opinion, as long as that windshield and shape is on it, its going to look old (school) no matter how you paint it. I would say own the old school exterior and put the money into modern mechanical upgrades.

Is that the rig I sold you. It looks great !!

Looks great with original paint. I was going to recommend the classic hockey stick paint job anyways. Maybe put a coat of clear coat on it if it's chalking up. I'd keep the original design. Agree with TxHawk, money better spent on mechanical upgrades.

I have a 1978 cigarette mistress with triple deck hatches. And beautiful teak inside with a cool naked lady wood carving inside. And a newer paint scheme. Like to find out more on my boat. Pics show a name Schaefer under console. When built love to find out what it looked like originally, I just bought this boat |
