At least you have the skill to do all this. That's what it's gonna take being way out there. Looking forward to the progress.
Besides knowledge I lack tools, starting at cero in this country, even had to fly the spark plug tool in :picard1: |

I talked to the original former owner once. Nice old fella, but his memory fading, he couldn´t answer all my questions. He bought the engine blocks from Shafiroff and assembled them himself, had the piston domes machined to lower compression and chose a mild cam.
Not sure why anybody would choose a drag engine for a boat, but hey, still happy to have some beefy irons under the hood. They should be 6-7 years old and under 50 hours. Need some more detective work to identify the Edelbrocks (they have rectangular ports) and the cams. Unfortunately I don´t have any specs on them and either on the ignition timing. No dyno in this country. I wonder how many hp, any wild guesses? |

Scott Shafiroff built a 548” for my old velocity and it was a super solid motor, and to my knowledge is still going strong. He is very approachable, I’d suggest calling him to verify what you have.

Good idea, will call him. Former owner told me he dealt with Vinnie, maybe you know him too.

Not much progress on the boat but had a crane build to pull the engines and managed to get the spare engine block to my workshop. Found a local mechanic to help me. Just when we wanted to start Malaysia went into full lockdown because of the coronavirus and I had to abandon my workshop. Before leaving I tossed some parts into my car so I have something to do at home. We have a lot of time now here, everything is closed and we are not allowed to leave home except for groceries (only one person at a time, police and military patrolling the streets).
So I disassembled the Harding water pumps, found broken impeller and corrosion. I really have to inspect every single piece of my boat, because every time I do, I find that it has to be serviced or repaired. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d2224134b6.jpg Photo is misleading, crane is only 2 ft higher than the arch and not that skinny https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...edc4d5091f.jpg Hardin 2 Stage Sea Water Pump https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...72d2bb86ab.jpg in pieces https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a587a65503.jpg this is what you get when saltwater sits for months without flushing https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...2a04772b10.jpg some steering parts https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...db80fdb603.jpg hours of hand polishing https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...1422a8b4de.jpg 4 days of curfew later https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...84e8a1738e.jpg the propeller still need a lot of work |
Nice crane - is that a harbor freight trolley? I have the exact same one.......

Still locked in at home, so I did some more cleaning. Starboard carburetor this time, lots of dirt and grime as usual. But somehow satisfying to see that there is a reason why the engines didn’t start (well, stbd is seized now anyway).
Can’t wait to put everything back in. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...133538d6a.jpeg Carburetor cleaning, again https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...357e903d1.jpeg Seller wondered why engine wouldn’t start https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...3a135fff6.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...4386a4932.jpeg All cleaned up https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...ea303627f.jpeg |
I think the lockdown will continue for quite a while but that will mean plenty of time for tinkering with smaller items. Wish I had a project sitting here to work on, lockdown life is getting boring........

Right, I’m happy that I grabbed some parts in the last moment so I have something to do while I cannot go to the boat. Not much of an accomplishment but better than nothing.
But even as I try to do everything as thoroughly as possible, soon I’ll be running out of things to do. Trying to buy some spare parts online for the water pumps, but looks like both here and in the States there are delays. Well, I have time, will give it a try. |

Good luck with the lock down, it’s boring and makes people wash tailpipes on the balcony and posting photos of it :picard1: https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...ac7363b52.jpeg |

After two months of lock down I could finally go back to my boat and continue working.
Man, that engine hatch is heavy, but taking it off was a piece of cake with the new crane https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...0bc054815.jpeg |
Help me identify my drives, did some scratching (again) and found the serial numbers.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...26ad88d92.jpeg Somebody can decode it or have a link for me? Is that B576241 or is it an 8? I thought up to 1984 it was 7 digits and after that 8 characters starting with a number, then a letter, then 6 more numbers, such as '0F456123'. The other one seems to be B576140 https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...50bd3e62c.jpeg |
I've got to tell you we really take for granted how easy we have it. Just today I ordered intake manifold gaskets and a SS fitting from Hardin and will have both in a day or two. It would be so frustrating to be in your position, waiting on parts, dealing with availability, access, etc. I admire you patience and drive.

When you went in to lockdown for 2 months, did you shut one of the local workers inside the shed with some polish and a bag of clean rags? Looking pretty darn clean. :)
And yeah, shiny, isn’t it? A lot of elbow grease by yours truly https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...accba5c33.jpeg |

Problem will be one day in a far future when I urgently need something for a day on the water and have to wait that long. |

thanks Seafordguy, actually right now it’s ok as the project will take months, if not years to finish. So I’m taking things apart, inspect and clean them, then I order spare parts and refurbishing kits and have all send to a warehouse in Miami where it’s consolidated and then send to me when I tell them. With customs clearance and all it takes a month or two.

I wronged my mechanic calling him lazy when in fact he passed away last week.
That’s a shame, this funny little guy was a great help and he could reach parts of the bilge I’m just too big for. Also the only one I know who had experience with gasoline inboards as they are so rare here. So I’m on my own now and have to see how to get the engines out. Thinking of making two plates which will attach to the marked points with an eye on top for the hook. Don’t want to ruin the aluminum heads. Good idea or not? https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...806b5d83a.jpeg |
How about 4 - 6" long bolt in front port exhaust bolt hole and one in back starboard exhaust bolt hole. Then use a lifting strap with two eye ends (one on each bolt) and lift. Make sure lifting strap will hold weight.

This is what I made, locate the eyelets on opposite front and rear corners of the heads, dont worry about the aluminum heads if you are pulling straight up with the 3 bolts attached to the lifting eye

Nice! Will try it out, seems to be straight forward. Thanks!

I've always lifted mine by the aluminum intake manifolds.....
Mine have the typical lifting eyes attacked to the two port/front and two starboard/rear intake bolts https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...38962652c.jpeg |

Looks like your making some decent progress.

Any info from shafiroff on the heads or cams that went into this combo? Might be some nice stuff based on the fact that there is a dominator on top.
|
Smart thinking on the box to catch the chain. I always battle a bad combination of rags, sweatshirts and paper towels that get Tangled in the chain.....

The chain is way too long, still struggling with the box. |
Nice progress!

The former owner assembled the engines, only the block came from Shafiroff, so they wouldn’t know. The heads are Edelbrock 6155 and the cams are Crane.
