With stock 24 Bravo props at 5000 rpms, you'll be doing well if you can get 65mph.

Some of the "kevlar boats" of the 90's were reinforced at the stringers and bulkheads with Kevlar. Thus the info you're receiving about "some parts being kevlar". Like stated above, there were roughly 3-5 "Carbon 70" series Cafe Racers built that had carbon fiber reinforced areas and would run 70 mph thus the name. But a 70 MPH Edition? Never heard of that. Sounds like someone did a little personal graphics.

for your input! Is 14% slip what you normally see on a comparable straight bottom? |
post a pic of the boat

Hello forum and hello dear fellow Cigarette owners,
I am new to this forum and a recently purchased a classic non step Top Gun 38 in mint condition. I think this boat has not been discussed with a repower to 8.2 MAG HO MPI before. Hope to raise interest in this thread. First I would like to share some data about my Gun: 1996 Top Gun 38 “70 MPH+ Edition” Former owner claims the hull is a Kevlar edition, at least some parts of the boat are, but I assume glas is the major material. Further I assume the boat already has a notched transom and the X Dim is higher than on older pre 1996 models since this boat was delivered with Bravos from factory and the balance and x dim problems with the switchover from TRS to Bravo were hopefully resolved by 1996. The original power was bulldog 500 caburated. The former owner already repowered to 8.2 MAG HO MPI (430HP) EU Version non cat. The Drives are standard Bravo X (1,5 ratio) The Exhaust is through hull CORSA. Boat bottom is not slowed down because it has no paint. My Questions: Question one: What top speed (in salt) can I realistically expect with this setup? So far I did not have the chance to test drive it. Former owner claims 5000 rpm with 24” 4- Blade Bravo props but no GPS speed confirm. Don’t know slip, cant calculate. Question two: What speed gains can i expect from the following mods: - Whipple stage two - IMCO boxes neutral X Dim - Sportsmaster lowers with minus 3 inch - Dialed in with better, more surface running props Thanks to any opinions! Best regards, C. BalticBoater first i want to thank everybody for posts and comments on my thread. Today i have bad news and good news; good news first: a couple of days ago i signed a buyers sellers agreement for a 2002 35 T/S Playboy. This boat is already located in Germany only about 350 Miles away from where i live. Day of delivery is scheduled for end of this week. I keep my fingers crossed. Bad news: The contract (buyers/sellers) agreement for the 38 Top Gun with the 8.2 HO repower could not be executed. Half Europe is now in shut down (Corona) and the boat is stuck in Italy. I will post pics of the playboy and will start a new thread about it. The current power is 500EFI Bravo XR standard. Thanks, and all the best, C. Baltic Boater |
Just for one selfish moment, ignore the Corona virus. If you are out of the initial contract cleanly, thats all good news for you.
Accepting the additional maintenance of Merc racing engines, the speed obsessed members here (nearly all of us :)) will say a twin step 35 with more power is a better boat. Good luck with the purchase. RR. |
+1 if you got out of the 38 cleanly - that makes your situation a good news/good news day.
In comparison of your first post with whipples, extension boxes and the like to get more speed out of the 38, you Playboy will easily exceed the top MPH/KPH what the 38 could ever deliver |
That's totally a win/win/ The 35 TS playboy is an awesome boat. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure you're referring to the blue / red playboy. Been for sale for a while now but the price seemed VERY good as did the condition of the boat. Congrats either way! You'll be happy with that package.

Will post more very soon, take care! |
