What drives would you get?

Ive got 1300 hp to think about. twin merlins 650 each. i have old trs drives on there now im thinking about #3s what do you guys think.its a cafe racer i know im not going bigger with the power, but the engines are 2 yrs old and just want to update with the corret drives.

clearcut3 12-05-2003 08:19 AM

If your going to change drives you might as well go with SSM 3A's. That way if you decide to put some more power to it later you will have some room to work with. At 650 a side you should have good reliability with 3A's.

It will also make it more attractive to future potential buyers when you inevitably just have to have that bigger boat.;)

You might want to look at the Konrad thread in GD.

Comanche3Six 02-22-2004 02:31 PM

Go for the speedmasters. Also upgrade the transmissions.
Wow, I love spending other peoples money!

cigarette1 02-22-2004 02:50 PM

You might want to sell the boat and get another ;)

TIGER-1 02-22-2004 03:46 PM

The boat has some weight to it,so go with 3a's.I,ve got
650hp with 3a's and have never had a problem. Also there are plenty of parts for 3a's,bravos are cheaper but they will break,I tried that before-no way!

Yes, check out the Konrad thread in GD.

www.konradmarine.com

The Konrad 540 High Performance is a direct bolt on the the TRS transom assy. It is warranteed to 740 ft lbs torque. Plus they are 1.5" shorter than a TRS.

I spent about an hour on the phone with Ken Konrad last week. He has these things working very well.I'm seriously looking into a pair for my boat this season.:D

It is a real nice looking unit.

mpally 02-22-2004 06:06 PM

How much do one of those go for?

Biggus 02-22-2004 07:37 PM

Retail for the drive only is @8k ready to bolt up to your TRS transom assembly

LETHAL WEAPON 02-22-2004 08:11 PM

I WOULD SUGGEST THE 3A'S. I'M RUNNING 1000HP THROUGH EACH OF MINE ON A TOP GUN, AND THEY HAVE STOOD UP WELL,AND IT HAS SEEN SOME ROUGH OFFSHORE WATER.ALTHOUGH I DID LOOSE A U-JOINT LAST SUMMER THAT RIPPED EVERYTHING FROM THE BELLHOUSING TO THE TOP OF THE DRIVE.BUT, HELL WHAT'S 20,000 WHEN YOU'RE HAVING FUN.

stecz20,

what is the problem with the TRS? Can't they handle that power in your rig?

Donz,

I have owned many TRS boats over the years and have had great luck with them. They are much stronger than a Bravo and shift a hell of a lot better too because of the transmission required.

I'm currently running @700 hp through my TRS in an older Top Gun and for the most part they have worked real well. I'm sure if I was running Bravo drives I would have blown many over the past two seasons.

From my experience with them, 650 hp will be fine. I have been told that the TRS will live longer if you stay with a three blade prop. (4 blade will get a bit too much bite) and spin the motors a little higher (a tad lower pitch than called for) also to reduce load on the drive.

I would not be afraid of a TRS boat one bit. There are some incredible bargains out there right now, and now that Konrad offers the K-540 TRS replacement drive, TRS parts will not be an issue in the future.

biggus, you always make me smile when you post pictures of my new rig. i posted that in dec when i was kicking around with maybe getting #3's. i am very happy with the trs and will keep them as long it makes sense to. im not going to say it doesn not make any sense to pour money into a cafe with crazy updates. if the boat is right for you, do what it takes to put a smile on your face with the rig you are into. i do know i will be getting another boat within the next few yrs. either biggus t/g or something along those lines.lol....i really like the cafe racer and plan on never getting rid of it, so i will update till my heart is content. i plan on updating the birth, the dash, and would like to update the drives, some day. for now the trs will be fine and i had just found out they had been redone before i bought the boat, along with fresh power. so im happy, for now....hey biggus did my driver ever get there, where is my t/g? dave

stecz20 02-24-2004 08:25 AM

hey biggus, iv never seen the dash and the birth of my gun. post some would ya...i dont want to take delivery without seeing the dash and birth.... dave

Do you know if TRS can be upgraded with boxes and shortie lowers?

Biggus 02-24-2004 10:40 AM

The Konrad drive is a shorty lower (1.5")

I'll find out if their box will work.
