spitfire....

Any word on what caused the clouding on your paint?

spitfire1 04-23-2004 04:31 AM

The boat was pulled out on Tue. and went to National Marine...Dave Hunter came by on Wednesday and took a look......I did not talk with him personally as I have been out of town...from what I understand....he attributed it to moisture under the clear coat....as I said...I have not had the oppurtunity to speak with him personally so I dont have the full story....the boat was taken down to Cigarette on thursday afternoon....I hope to talk with Neil some time today.....I will let you know what I find out if anything....I am obviously quite concerned about this whole situation as this is the third time it has had to go back to Cigarette for this problem.......:(

Keep in touch!!

spitfire1 04-23-2004 11:16 AM

Just a quick update...I spoke with Dave Hunter this morning and he said that the problem was with moisture under the clear coat.....he thought that it could be rectified with wet sanding and polishing it back out....This is what Cigarette has done the last two times it was brought in.....I dont know how much clear they are removing when they do this....but this is the only way to address the problem I guess.....I am trying to get in touch with Neil now and see what the status is......

I have just got off the phone with Neil...the boat is done and ready to be picked up. So I will be going to get it tomorrow morning....the boat was wet sanded and re-cleared .....It was my impression that they are not exactly sure as to why this is occurring but could be one of several things....I have been instructed to keep the cover off the boat for at least two weeks to allow the paint and the re-cleared areas to cure....the sunlight should accelerate this process I guess....In any case I am not going to wax it for a month or until they advise me that they think it is safe to do so.....I hope this is the end of it......As a side note....I just want to add that Neil and Cigarette have stepped up and taken care of the problem without any hesitation each time I have brought the boat in.....although they are extremely busy and have a time table to contend with...the boat was taken care of....no excuses......it is unfortunate that I have had these problems but at least they have been there to stand behind the product 110%....the boat went in on Thursday and is ready to go on Friday afternoon.....Thank you very much Neil for your commitment to the customer.....I appreciate it greatly............Rich

Yes, it's tough having trouble like that with a new boat, but it would be ten times worse having a problem and a builder that didn't care. So you are both unlucky and lucky as the same time. Good luck with it. You ever bring it to the west coast?

Is it possible to sand and clear a boat in that timetable?Maybe it was just the section in question only?

spitfire1 04-24-2004 02:30 PM

It was only the section in question that was sanded and then re-cleared........I have picked up the boat now and hope that this is the end of it....I guess I will find out soon enough,.......Cuda....I dont have a trailer nor a truck to pull it with so my boating is limited to how far I want to take it.....by water,........2112..... I saw your boat in the paint booth....they have completed the sanding it looked like and were masking it for the new paint.....should be a real head turner from what I saw.....hope you have better luck than I am having.....

I do too!

I Know that Neill would take care of any problems, it is that I am 3,200 miles away and that throws a wrench into the equation.

Was anyone able to explain how the moisture got in there in the first place? Does it soak in after it is on when you have it covered?

spitfire1 04-25-2004 07:52 AM

Neil didn't really know....he said that could be one possibility..however , my boat is washed and hand towel dried after each outing before the cover is put back on...so unless moisture condensed under the cover and sat, I don't know how it could have happened.....but anything is possible I guess....another scenario could have been a malfunctioning gun...or the desiccant not working....in any case the result would have been the same....If this comes back again...I don't know what the next move will be....hopefully it wont come to that......Rich

Good luck ... I also hope thi is the last time you'll have any issues with your paint ... your paint design looks awesome.

And, thanks Neil, for taking care of a brother ... a Cigarette Brother
