Cigarette 28SS and Towing
Has anybody weighed their 28SS to know absolutely how heavy these things are? I'm looking at a couple of them and am concerned about towing.
How heavy are these things with twin smallblocks? |
Re: Cigarette 28SS and Towing
I have understood around 6500# plus trailer.

How heavy are these things with twin smallblocks? I tow mine with a 3/4 ton Dodge with a cummins. It will roll 70 MPH down the road all day with little effort. Rebar - It was nice hanging out with you all last weekend. Looks like my trouble free summer has come to an end unfortunately. Might have to pull starboard engine. :( |
Re: Cigarette 28SS and Towing
I've got a 28 Open that has been converted to a single. With all our gear and 120 gallons of fuel, I weighed it last Summer on an early morning trip. Boat came in at 5,900 Lbs and my Loadmaster trailer weighs 1,500 pounds. So whatever you are planning on pulling your boat with should probably be fine with 8600GVWR or less.
If you haven't been there already, check out the literature over on www.thunderboatalley.com |

I towed this set up 2500 miles across the country with no problems. Truck is a 1/2 ton GMC C3 (6.0 engine). The trailer was really heavy and didn't have brakes! I have an aluminum trailer now and the weight savings is substantial.
I think, like Rebar said, about 6500# plus trailer (twin sbc's w/alphas). I will be weighing my soon. |

That was in a little semi-ghost town called McLean, TX, about 60 miles east of Amarillo. I stopped there because I saw a sign for the Route 66 museum. The museum is also the Devil's Rope museum dedicated to barbed wire. It was pretty cool. It was a b!tchin' little town and I had the most peacefull relaxed feeling while I was there. It was very quiet with no traffic or people walking around. There were several old abandoned buildings and gas stations. There was an "Andy Taylor" town police pick up with a young kid in the back parked at the side of the road. He waved and watched (I think in shock) as I slowly drove by. I think you could take a 2 hour nap in the middle of the road and no one would notice. If I ever go through there again I will stop and spend some time looking around more and trying to meet some residents. Must be interesting to see what hapened to the town. |

Re: Cigarette 28SS and Towing
I'm going to do the route 66 trip again next summer in my '32 Ford. I'm going to take about a month and try to hit every part of old 66. Most of it is freeway now but there are still sections of the old road paralleling the freeway. I'll take a ton of photos and try to talk to as many old timers in the small towns as I can. There are many books about route 66 but most are filled with old photos and the history. This is cool but I'd like to write a book about the people along the way that were part of the old buildings and towns. I love talking to older folks about what it was really like growing up before they had electricity and cars and radios and all the stuff we take for granted.
My grandmother is 95 and stills lives in Vermont where she (and I) grew up. As a child, she lived on a dairy farm (most people in VT did back then) and they made and sold ice cream. They had an out house, no electricity or running water in the house. In the summer they would go into town (Weston, VT) for supplies. In the winter they wouldn't leave the farm because it was too hard to try to get the wagon over the trails in the snow. And kids in SoCal today think they have it rough! |

Re: Cigarette 28SS and Towing
Well, made the trip from Detroit to Austin with the new 28SS behind my 1998 C1500. The truck is no worse for the wear after 1200 plus miles and 24 hours. Travelled at 60-65 and got 9 to 10mpg.
The load distributing hitch worked great but I'm also glad that I had air bags over the leaf springs. 6 links on the spring bars and 60psi in the bags and the truck rode well. Was also glad I put 3:73 gears in the truck before the trip. The 3:42's would have been a bit much and the truck is a whole lot more fun to drive around town (especially with the Whipple at full noise)! |

You moving up to a gun Thrill?
Nope, looking for either an updated Bullet or Mistress with "larger than normal" power, something that will make theese old tanks see respectable numbers and staying remotely conservative on engine life  |

Re: Cigarette 28SS and Towing
lucky strike your correct the first sneaky pete was in the hennessy an benihana, that boat wasa maxum with straight 6's came close in 1976 but broke a water hose 2 miles from finish. its not the maxums we know today ,his was the same as a 23 formula, after that he ( pete begovich) owner of sneakypete 1 sold it and it became a fishing boat and he purchase the 28 open from arnolds boat basin and named it sneaky pete II a 1973 28 open
