Does Your Boat Lean to the Right?

When your boat sits at the dock is the starboard side lower in the water than the port looking at it from the stern?

It did until I put both batteries on the port side, in the engine compt., between the port stringer and the hull as far back as I could get them.
It makes removal of the rear batt. a bear, but it can be done.
This inst. is on a side-by-side 38 w/blower motors running #5 SSM drives.

Both my batteries are on the port side.

Mine seems to sit straight, but now I will have to take a closer look at it this weekend. You got me wondering. My batteries are one on each side.

Only when the cooler is empty. Mine has a slight lean to the right.

Now that I look at the question carefully...

The way your boat leans???

I would guess it depends which hand you use to rub one out!

Mine does but I do have a/c and a small water tank
on the starboard side.

Mine does, suppose I'll have to move the bodies again.

Re: Does Your Boat Lean to the Right?

Believe it or not - every Top Gun I have ever seen sitting at a dock seems to lean to the starboard side slightly. I originally thought it was my boat - a 1994 Top Gun. Then I looked at two other Top Guns - a 1997 and a 1999. All of them - regardless of power and equipment - leaned to the right.

I thought it might be due to the slight extra weight of the driver's helm on the starboard side. Since it bugged me I performed an unscientific test. I had both gas tanks filled to the top and then I had a 170lb. friend stand on the port side to see how much it offset the lean. If he stood all the way to the port - the slight lean changed to the port side. If he moved about six inches towards center - the boat was exactly level. I found it difficult to believe that the helm would make that much of a difference (in excess of 100lbs.) to cause the lean.

I actually think that is the reason Cigarette placed the batteries on the port side in the older boats. It seems like there might have been a slight variance in the mold that either caused the hull to be uneven at the transom and appear to lean - or maybe the hulls did lean. I have never heard of any problems but I definately had a lean on my boat. It used to bug the crap out of me!

You know whats crazy..... My 1982 35 Mistress leans a bit. Also and especially I always find myself dragging the starboard tab (not drastic but more than I'd like) to keep her level. I always try on convince myself.... oh thats the wind or current. But every time I am out on the boat it leans to starboard. It drives me so crazy that I make people stand/sit on the port side when running hard because I hate dragging that tab all the time. Crazy....

Danny - You're definately not crazy in feeling the way you do. I used to fill the port gas tank with an extra 20 gallons or so to try to balance the boat out. If I had three people on board including myself I would have the third passenger stand behind the passenger (port) bolster. I did whatever I could to make sure there was always more weight on the port side. Strange indeed!!

My TG seems to need stbd tab to keep it level. Seems to list to right when on plane. I thought it was because of wind.

I wonder if the weight of all the gauges, cables, shifters, helm etc is what causes it? If you look at several boats sitting in the water side by side at a raft up, all the right hand drive boats seem to lean righ a little. Just an un scientific observation from a raft up a couple weeks ago.

I talked with someone much more knowledgeable about Cigarettes than myself and what he said made sense. On the older Cigs., the enclosed head, the helm, and the big tube that all of the wiring goes through is on the starboard side. :eureka: Add that to the fact that hopefully :D you weigh more than your wife/girlfriend, and a slight lean is there. I've never noticed it on mine, but I'm willing to believe my friend when he says that they all do it.

Hi, Mr. Cig's wife here. As he mentioned, our flatdeck does lean slightly also. I put our gear on the port cushion below, that seems to make it better.
