Does anyone know this Top Gun?
http://server1.offshoreonly.com/geoc....php?a=2&b=206
I seem to remember a board member having this for sale, now it's at TNT. I'm not sure I'm ready to bite off the upgrade (new truck, trailer, etc), but this looks like a good deal. It appears to be in great condition and well maintained. I suppose my biggest question/concern would be the power. What kind of speeds would you expect out of 502's? I've searched and found very little info on TG's with them. It seems that most Guns are sporting quite a bit more power; would this boat be a dog? (no disrespect to the previous owner). What would it take to reliably hit 68-70 mph in a non-step TG? I'm assuming this one is fiberglass since it isn't mentioned in the ad. Thanks, Andy |

Thanks, Andy I've got a 91 Top Gun Carbon Fiber (light layup) with 525SC that runs 72. It's not the year...It's the power. $89,500. LS JR. |

It's the year, it's the new style interior, it's the bravo drives, it's the external steering, it's the stock mercruiser power, it's the low hours, it's the modern graphics, and it's the fact that your boat is priced above market value and the 1994 is priced below market value... Quite honestly bravo drive boats are more desirable and sell for more money than trs drive boats. Andy, As far as speed with this setup LS is on the money... This boat will run between 63 and 65 mph. You are correct the boat is fiberglass not carbon fiber. The current boats are also fiberglass not carbon fiber. Regards |

If I wanted to be in a Top Gun for the look then yes buy a stock Merc. powered boat, but were not, and we want a boat that runs over 70 all day. For the same money would you want a boat with Merc. 502s or Hawk 525s? Personally, I'd rather pay the same for a few year older Top Gun with bigger power than a newer boat with stock power. We all know they take big power to run. Yes, I know ours is above market value, but you have to have some room for negotations, right? Also, we have over 20k in engine receipts with all new Gil Exhaust. That is worth something. What about yours? Your 2002 is the 2nd most expensive 2002 on the market at 265k, the first is $269k! I looked at several Top Guns before we bought ours. Ours is really in excellent shape. If you come down for the Boat Show we'll take you for a spin. The Carbon Fiber also makes the boat handle different. Yes, I know bravo drive boats are more desirable and bring more money, but we don't have to be worried about the drives blowing everytime we go out. My $.02 LS JR. |

It seems as though I have struck a nerve and that was not my intention. I don't recall claiming to have ever seen your boat or knowing what type of condition it is in. As far as knowing the hours, I did know that because I have viewed your classified ads before. I can tell you from the pictures I have seen of your boat it looks very nice. As far as my 2002 being the most expensive on the market, you are sadly mistaken as I know for a fact Randy Sweers has a 2002 with the same setup for 269k except the boat he has listed does not come with a trailer and it is also a saltwater boat. Regards Like I said, we have bills for over 20k for motors with all new exhaust. I'm sure that is worth something to someone who knows there getting a boat with motors that have 43 hrs on them. Thanks, Andy Example: In the Spring "Loaded Gun" sold with 500hp's. This was a newer boat (like 99 I think). The boat would run a little over 75mph. If you took 500hp's and dropped them into a late 80's early 90's boat, you would struggle to get close to 70mph. |
Re: Does anyone know this Top Gun?
LS JR. I do not remember ever showing this boat to you. Did you see it in person? I have to disagree with you on a few things. From the countless number of buyers I talked to and delt with over the years, I would say stock Mercruiser power is overall more desirable. To run your boat 70mph all day you would have to run it wide open all day. I don't think that is realistic. The cruise speed, where most people operate their boats, is the same as your boat, using 3800rpm as a benchmark. I have personally owned 5 Top Guns with 525's and TRS drives. two of them were carbon fiber. The difference in performance or ride of any of them was insignificant. I would say that the ride on the TRS boat with the center of gravity slightly further forward was better than a Bravo Top Gun with Mirage 3 blade propellers. When the Bravo One 4 blade props arrived on the scene that became no longer true. The Bravo drive package has less horsepower loss than the TRS package. This means a Bravo drive boat is faster with the same power. Not only will the Bravo drives take more power than the TRS, but after market parts are available to make it even stronger. I don't think the reason they are not building the new boats from carbon is because the light weight isn't needed. Wouldn't it be better if the same 500EFI T/S Top gun ran 90mph? All you have to do is make it lighter, compare the F-2 T/S Top Gun to a standard boat. Personally I always liked the graphics on your boat, one of the boats I owned had the exact same paint scheme and colors, but I prefer the graphics on the 94 Top Gun you are referring to. Graphics and guage colors are a mater of taste, everyone likes something different.
