need advice

Two months ago my father and I bought Bob Torters 1990 42 revolution. We are going thought the boat front to back, new paint, everything! The boat has twin staggered 700hp or 750hp Donovans with #6s. The motors run good, Bob said that the boat ran 82mph. We have the motors to our motor guy and he thinks we should go with dart blocks. He thinks that cast blocks would be better than the aluminum Donovans for the boat. We know he builds good motors, he built us 1000hp for our Active Thunder. But we also know that Donovans are good motors. So what should we do, Donovan blocks or the Dart blocks? Thanks Heath

im redoing a 1990 revolution as well with new red gelcoat, interior ,gauges , drive t/a's, drives redone, and rebuilding triple 640hp hawks, do u have any photos of your boat? id think there'd be cheaper performance upgrades that would get more hp than switching out blocks. i'd wait for an expert to put their $.02 in cause im prob not the one to ask

Re: need advice

FWIW- The Dart blocks are the current favorite. The Donovans are aluminum? You need to use a closed cooling system for those for longevity thereby losing some of the benefits w/ extra weight.

It would depend on the water conditions, for us on the Gulf, I would consider cast iron, but you may run in fresh H2Omight not be as bad. Lets remember that it is the oxidation that causes the trouble. I have seen alot of aluminum intakes come thru the door with very little corrosion seen alot that did have usually it was the issue of not flushing good then air gets n the system. Being that one Donivan is worth what two Darts are worth , you could trade someone or sell them with little problem. my 2 cents

great boat, looks like an awesome project, r ya beefing up the engines any? im jsut gettin the transoms and engines in mine and hope to go for a test run this weekend althought the interior/seats in thre cabin and cockpit has all been pulled out for redoing and half the gauges dont even work, hey mayb i can pick up a few mph :D

Re: need advice

The motors will probably stay at the 700hp to 800hp. Its been a fun project so for. We have the cabin pretty much done. The cockpit is getting paint this week, gauges and dash panels should be here next week. And thanks for all the input. I talked to the engine builder and he said he would trade us even up and help us out on some labor. Trading the donovan blocks for new darts. Sounds like a pretty good idea to me.

Re: need advice

did u make new panels, or repaint them? if so how did u label the switches at the top of the drivers side panel?

bshzba 02-23-2005 07:53 AM

Re: need advice

We painted them. It was a lot cheaper. Livorsi will make you new ones but it will cost you a couple G's. So we had them painted and then sent then to Eddie Marine to laser in the words. I'll let you know how they turn out when I get them back.

Re: need advice

I will post some pics and let you know a price when I get them back. What kind of speeds are you panning on getting with the 3x640hp?

375stinger 02-24-2005 03:15 PM

Re: need advice

im not sure about the speeds, some poeple say 90, and some say mayb at most 80. but if ur gettin 82 wiht twin 700-800 then i tihnk it should run about 90 when im done wiht it. i will be taking it for a test run this weekend or the next depending on how quick the parts get in.

Re: need advice

i jsut talked to eddie marine who i got all my gauges from about engraving my panel as well. btw, does ur boat ahve a knob-like object sticking out of the passengers side panel? cause mine has it and i dont want to remove it and later find out there is an actual reason for it. Ill try to post some pics of the boat later.

Remote control for a spotlight?

375stinger 02-25-2005 03:56 PM

Re: need advice

it doesnt move at all. all i could tihnk of would be a mount for a mirror or something. if it has no use then i want to get rid of it but i dont ahve anything to fill the hole on the panel.

Re: need advice

Mine dont have that, but mine had something there like some kind of 3 prong clip to hold something. We were thinking of cutting on oval piece of alum. and put a cig logo on it to cover up the holes. Our spot lights for ours are where the grab handle holes are and the grab handle is moved down.

Re: need advice

Also have you tried or know of where you can get white compasses to work in the place of the black ones?

375stinger 02-25-2005 07:08 PM

Re: need advice

i looked for those before and couldnt find any, i decided to go with red panels and black gauges. i no that you can get the round compasses for a panel in white but i have yet to see the square ones.

Re: need advice

I think I will just end up painting ours. Our boat will be mostly white with red panels and white gauges with chrome rims. Howard that paints a lot of cigs is designing a paint job for it.

Re: need advice

wut kinda interior&paint scheme u thinking about? im gettin the boat re-gelcoated in solid bright red with the name "2hot4u" on the side with solid white cabin and cockpit interior, and im repainting the area behind the dash in red with red dash panels and black livorsi gauges

That 3 prong clip sounds like where the stopwatch was held.

Re: need advice

Thats probably what the clip is for. I like that name. We boat on lake Huron mostly. A friend of our just bought a top gun and he lives down by Saint Clair Shores so we will be down there a lot. We are keeping the arch. Inside the cabin is all white with red side and center panels. The cockpit is all white. The dash is white with red panels, gauges are white with chrome rims and new white switches. The outside will be mostly white with a red, blue, yellow, and silver paint scheme/ stripes. Where do you boat?

Re: need advice

we keep our boats at lake cumberland, but might take it down to florida a few times, are ya keeping the original name for your boat?
