Re: What to look for in a Cafe
Allan,
Glad the headers worked out for you. Always happy to help a fellow Cig owner... now as for that tool that's trolling this forum...that's another story :) I just wonder why all the other boat builders out there have yet to catch up to that new whiz-bang pad bottom design??? Don't bother answering...it was a rhetorical question... |
Re: What to look for in a Cafe
I wonder if he is talking up his boat because it's for sale? Wonder why someone with a boat that bad ass would want to sell it?? Maybe to buy a cig??

Re: What to look for in a Cafe
when i first started looking for a used fountain i kept asking sellers what their next boat was going to be? Can you guess their answers..Cig top gun...need I say more .While looking for a top gun i asked what to look for? factory reps from cig said look a 2nd stepin cabin if its cracked it means it was being launched off 10foot waves..if your jumping 10 inch waves buy thefountain good luck hunting.

Cool boat, thanks for the pics!!! Will call you when I sell my pontoon!!! :D |

I am so happy you had the opportunity to at least have met a girl ONCE!!! and the only cafe was the Denny's that was open after the bars close so you could feed your face with more!!!!! as for trailers it sounds like you know more about them than I dooooo!!!!! :p OH and for the washing clothes I would be afraid of what ---- marks I would find in your pants. later |

86 is a raised style deck. Nice boat. I had one. A few serious issues to watch for. The deck design allows water to pool at the point where the cowling desends and meets the deck. Very poor design. Drain holes should have been designed like for the hatches of a TG. Check for rot. The bulkhead between the v-berth and bench side seats is also a contingent weak area. Make sure you check the area where the liner is attached to the stringers underneath the bench seat storage compartments). Check for cracks (spider fractures). The boats also exhibited some weakness in the engine compartment where the bulkhead (firewall or liner) is attached to the hull (rear seat area). Good luck. |

Re: What to look for in a Cafe
Not to stop all of this banter. However, getting back on track here.....
I was looking for a Cafe Racer for over a year. A good friend of mine had a '93 that was flawless and if the timing was right I would've picked it up when he bought his T/S Gun. But I didn' t and I kept looking for a Cafe. I don't know what your price range is but it sounds like you are looking to spend somwhere between 65k to 80k. The things I knew I wanted was this: 1) the newer cabin...made after 1990 models. This layout was much more user friendly w/a small table, a head, and most importantly the large built in cooler!! 2) If possible an updated cockpit. This includes the head rest in the seats and a white dash. Alot of the early 90's Cafe's had black dashes and all had the low profile seats until '92 or 93 when they started putting them in. 3) Bravos. This is an ongoing debate and I know alot of people on here love TRS's but I had an issue with buying a boat with discontinued drives. 4) Turn key power. No blowers or older engines. I wanted newer 502's, HP500's or EFI 500's if possible. I ended up speaking with Phil and he eventually talked me out of a Cafe and put me into a T/G for the same money I was looking at spending on a Cafe. The deals are out there. Be patient and look around. There is a lot to be said for a late 80's cafe that has been totally updated like the 88 that is currently in the classifieds with that killer paint scheme! Good price and looks like a new boat. Good luck with the search! And just remember as soon as you start pimpin' the new Cig around you're going to forget about any other boat you have!! :drink: |
