No it's not mine. This photo was taken in 1978. In 1977 it belonged to Bill Elswick, 1980 National Champion in Long Shot #144, in a 39 foot Cigarette. The throttleman was none other then Bob Latham of Latham Marine fame. This boat is the boat that got me involved in offshore powerboat racing and brought alot of friendships and fun into my life.

Bill Elswick and Bob Latham won the production class in the 1977 Benihana Grand Prix in Evil Ways M-144 the same year that Joel Halpern and Wayne Vickers won the Open Class in Beep-Beep US-1.

It's not my boat, though I wish it were. These photos are 28 years old and the boat was owned and driven by Bill Elswick who was a sort of an offshore mentor to me when I was about 10 years old. I just thoght it would be nice to share them with everyone. I love reading all of the "Old School" posts and seeing all of the photos. I spent a lot of time at races in the late '70's through the mid '80's and have kept in contact with alot of the people from those days. I hope you enjoy my contribution to this site. John |
