HORBA Forum

Many members of the Historic Offshore Race Boat Association have asked that we start a forum.

We are not set up to do that, but with this new section of OSO, maybe we could use this space and encourage our members to join over here at OSO, and have a forum specifically about the old race boats.

Some of our members have already restored their old race boats and the list is growing daily...maybe they would post their boats.

Here are some for now.

Thanks Mark....now explain to the folks who don't know, what those pictures are.

Why did we use staggered engines and what was the fuel capacity of the old race boats?

My boat, the Top Banana, carried 510 gallons of fuel between saddle tanks on either side of the engines and tanks located just ahead of the dash area.

We shifted fuel back and forth as we needed different weight distribution during the race and at the end of the race, we would pump over the side any extra, trying to get the boat as light as possible.

This forum can be used to answer questions from people that never saw an open ocean race or some of the equipment used back then.

My Sutphen Race Boat was built to be a racer. It has two tanks 1 under the floor & 1 in the cabin. There are pumps that switch the fuel in case you need more weight forward or aft.

Mark if you remember the old Kiekhaefer Champion Maker motors had no belts at all....everything was gear driven. I wonder what that did for them for reliability.

I see that your motors have belts on them. Do you know if anyone today is making motors with gears rather than belts?

We just opened up a couple of new sections on the site.

One is for catamaran race boats only and the other is titled personalities....a lot of head shots of people whose names have been around for along time, but no one knows what they look like because they always had a helmet on and were flying off a wave in the photos.

Does anyone recognize the guy in the tunnel boat?

The next step is to put up some of the members boats. We have had a lot of them e-mail the photos to us, and we tried to get a good range of all types of boats.

Videos and the store are still in the under construction phase. We do have some photos up for auction on ebay under Sports memorabilia, photos. We had extra PR photos and releases that we are auctioning off.

Trying to put together a calendar for Christmas gifts. 12 large format photos of the old 36 foot Cigarette race boats. Also working on a version of a coffee table type book, also for Christmas.

Also just rec'd the latest EXTREME BOATS MAG in and it has a very nice story written by our own Ron P about the Historic Baots in NY for the poker run. Some nice photos that show a pair of real monster engines by Kiekhaefer Aeromarine.

check it out www.historicraceboats.com

Thought I'll share some pics of the original 482 champion engines from 1972, we are putting in the old Kiekhaefer Aeromarine 3 currently beeing restored in Norway. As you can see this is not a common big-block from a car converted for boat , but pure racing from the early seventies. I must say Carl Kiekhaefer made a point on having his logo cast in on all the parts.....

Best regards Joern

Marco, I would be very very grateful if you could scan the book and mail it to : [email protected]
The guy who had the engines lost his copy and that would be a nice part of the documentation for the restored Aeromarine 3.

Sunsation 25,
Yes they are impressive and the same configuration as the Can-Am setup GM used. Rumers say they are from Crower but all over there is Kiekhaefer casting marks. We might go with todays technology and EFI with el-injectors if we are unable to manage the mechanical system, the dyno run will show. As you can se on the enclosed pic bosses are already cast on the lower part of the manifold, but not yet machined.
