Mike American Moppie was the second Bertram 31' ever builded,(the first was the Bertram's personal last race- boat ,the My Moppie),in 1967,and drove by the at that time Bertram's chairman Peter Rittmaster. Since that boat still had the old transmissions,Rittmaster builded a second American Moppie with the stern drives. It was sold in 1970 to Ronny Bonelli and became Mister Charly. Marco The 31' Bertrams was cutting edge before Don Aronow reshuffled the pack with his 32' "The Cigarette" and the 36' that followed. Here are two photos borrowed from Graham Stevens Library on Boatmad. They help to highlight the differences between the two hulls and check the innovations in design which basically made that one hull took over the other as the top equipment in offshore racing. That was a Dan Arena hull. He also built hulls for Howard Arneson.
Dan Arena was a well known west coast figure that built primarily hydroplanes and fast runabouts. Unfortunately his offshore designs did not prove long lasting. He was an Original "Gold Cup" racer. He had some great stories as well as success. He build one hull for Howard, raced once. Delaminated the side in the first race. Fast, but a cold molded boat was not the same as it is by today's standards. |

It seems that it was a common theme on Tim Powell's boats. Here is a photo taken at the 1970 Deauville Trophy. A 'Cigarette Racing team' decal is clearly visible above the name of his previous boat. Like yourself, I wouldn't mind finding the reason. Phil. |

Did Balestrieri ever raced #89? I am only asking because all the info I have indicate that Cosentino drove the 31' Bertram 'Red Tornado' on this event. I was there but I didn't have a clue of who was who and what was what at the time. I was 10 and this was my first taste of Offshore Racing. I thought that the 007 boat belonged to James Bond (sad but true). Phil. |
