Pantera Old School Info
 

Hi, I just bought a 1980 Pantera 24 sport. I love the old school look of the Panteras. It reminds me of a mineature Apache or Flat Deck Cigarette.

I've seen a lot of good info on the Panteraboats.com web site but I was wondering if anyone has any more good history or photos? I'm curious about the history on the hull shape and additional photos of Pantera race boats over the years.

you have to do a search on the pantera owners forum for the thread Jo has w/ tons of old pics.
As far as hull history, it seems kinda an unknown, with lots of similar hulls from different builders from the 70s.

Thanks. I actually sat down one afternoon and went through almost all of the Pantera section. Some great stuff.

Since I've recently had some people that I would have expected to be pretty knowlagable act like I was talking about a car when I mentioned my boat, I thought I'd see what kind of info there was outside the "cult"!

The hull shape did make me curious. Specifically why the Pantera is such a good rough water boat in comparison to other similar hulls (at least based on internet commentary). I wondered where the origin for the shape was.

Brownie may correct me but most boats that look like yours, including the 38 Cig and 41 Apache, came from the 27 Magnum........here's Don in about 1968.

Pantera was a plug that was made from scratch by Pepe ( Pantera's owner)..He designed it all

If you compare the Pantera 28 hull to Cig 27 and the other hulls that was developed from the Cig there is not much that is unsimilar, just look at e.g the cancave freeboards and the distance between the "hull steps". My experience says that it's origin is the Cig 27 and Pantera updated and improved it to there own specifikations.

28pantera's based on a 28mag.
But the 24 is 7ft beam.

Thanks for the compliment. I got my boat from Ironman here on OSO. It's a great boat.

I'd heard a rumor/offhand comment that the 24' was derived from a Chris Craft hull. The magnum/cig connection seems more plausible, but I'm not that familiar with the CC line after it went to fiberglass...

I guess as far as a straight 24 degree V hull most of them are going to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

The hull design came from Excalibur but was designed by Aronow. Pepe designed the pantera deck(s). Pepe told me this face to face in his shop. T-Mone who also has a 24 pantera was there as a witness.

The hull has been copied by a number of people over the years and there are two very small but very specific details that will let you know if it came from this design. But pretty much every hull thats 24 ft with a 24 deg. deadrise and a 7 ft beam came from this hull.

Theres lots of 24 ft boats with 24 deg. hulls but not that many that are a 7 ft beam. I think Pantera is the only one that still builds them.

Great Looking boat. That's about what I'm shopping for these day's.

I think there are a LOT of splashes of that hull by different builders - but I can't help you with the origin.

I was looking at a Python this past summer that I swear is another splash of it.

Pepe was selling the first 24 footers in the outside parking lot at the Miami Boat Shop in the late 70s,, many of the boat builders were using this area to sell their boats. It was a nice boat back then and still is .

Fortunately it has sit down seating! Once I'm in I'm pretty comfy, but just like my truck, nobody can sit in the seat behind me. Heck I'm only 6'2" and 250ish...

I bought it as my "practice boat" after looking at some bigger boats first (35' flat deck Cig, 28' Panteras etc). I wanted something manageable and easy for my first boat after 15 years away, but I also wanted something that would handle the Pacific. I'm very fond of the boat, but if all goes as planned I'll move up to something larger within a year or two (unless my wife discovers the two dirties words in boating... Sea Ray in which case I may have it for quite a bit longer).

Thanks for all the insight guys. Keep it coming! I get a kick out of this stuff, I used to be a vintage race car guy. Man that Python does look a lot like a Pantera huh?

It sure did to me - that's what I liked about it. It had been traded in on bass-boat at a local dealer in my backyard. I still have tons of pics of it on my hard drive. If you want to look and compare, I can e-mail them this weekend. Shoot me a PM with your e-mail.

Like I said, I think there have been ALOT of splashes of that hull - some better than others from the research I did on this particular boat. Not meaning anything bad about Python, but some are better than others.
In my mind Pantera is Pantera - 'nuff said.

Man, I just looked at the Superboat web site and the similarities between the SB 24', that Python and the Pantera are kind of suprising too!

I was at the outside show in Miami in 76 and the only 24's with a seven foot beam outside was Excalibur, Jaws, and i think Carrera.I have asked this question on this site many times but have yet to get an answer about the origin of the 24 foot by seven foot beamed hull that has been copied over and over.

I am pretty sure that the magnum 24 went back to '74 and had to be one of the first 24 X 7'ers, If you look closely at the first 24 from about '76 on the Pantera website even the deck resembles the magalthough it is more squared off but not the same as the newer boats. Then Pepe retooled the deck and added the small pad and a few other subtle changes to the bottom. The earlier Superboats had no pad as I remember and the more curved deck lines resembling the Magnum. I was told it was tooled off the 24' Mag also.
