B19 RUNAWAY video
I just posted some video from 1998 of my 28 foot Magnum race boat B-19 RUNAWAY.
This was a fun run we did in summer of 1998 in Barnegat Bay NJ. I am in the center driving, my long time friend and racing partner Chuck Burke is on the throttles, and our navigator, Steve Pollok can be seen in his Cig TG, as he runs with us. The speed can be appreciated about 2:22 in on part-1. The video is from the route 37 bridge, south to Manahawkin, and back north to Forked River, where I lived at the time. Of all of the boats I have owned through the years, this one is the only one that I really really miss. I would love to buy her back and restore her, but she has been to badly stripped, and is now overseas. Video part 1 www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-EbIsyoV00 Video part 2 www.youtube.com/watch?v=09ky3kCkb08 Other photos and video are at my web site www.dkorinc.homestead.com under general picture gallery & video clip gallery. |

Re: B19 RUNAWAY video
Great videos! You might not be able to easily get the boat back, but I think you can get the drives back as long as you're willing to buy the Hustler they are attached to. Just out of curiousity...where overseas did Runaway end up?

Bytheway what was the original rigging & engines? |
Re: B19 RUNAWAY video
Yikes!! Sorry 24degrees....didn't realize there was an existing name so close. I'll be making a change. Worry not!

Re: B19 RUNAWAY video
I sold off the drives, gimbels and steering, and they went on to a very nice 32 Hustler. Looking back the price was fair for me and fair for the buyer. I have always really liked the 32 Hustler.
ABout a year later, I sold everything else that was left. If the buyer still had the race hull and race motors together and in the US, I would have bought her back a long time ago. He sent the hull to Sweden, and sold the engines (where most of the money was) went to a guy in either NC or SC. Te see the specs on the engines that I had in the boat, go to my web site www.dkorinc.homestead.com and then go to the Magnum tech specs. |
Re: B19 RUNAWAY video
That Hustler probably has seen the water 3 or 4 times since those drives went on it. The guy had it rigged, ran it a few times and became a dad (not sure if one had to do with the other...it normally does). I know he had some issues with the 540's in it, so he had both engine overhauled. It went back out to Long Island to be sold a couple weeks ago. I never saw it finished but hear it's a nice boat. I think he was trying to get somewhere in the 40's for it.

Re: B19 RUNAWAY video
hmmm smallblock... a 400 bore and 350 stroke 374 bowtie block !
Thinkin of a pair of 383īs and Darts plus some work plus good drives and off to a good start... How high did you spin them engines in it? |

No problem.....you and I probably think alike.....:) |
Re: B19 RUNAWAY video
4.125 bore x 3.50 stroke = 374cid
7700rpm, 1.50 drive ratio, 24 4-blade = 102mph |
Re: B19 RUNAWAY video
Whoa..7700 constant...That has been a Screamer!
How much hp ? 500-550 per engine? Iīd have a spare Kinsler Stack f.i unit and a Donovan 400 Al-block for spares... But instead was thinking on the lines of a pair of 383īs and Kinslers...hmmm I might have to go and take at look at that hull.... |
Re: B19 RUNAWAY video
650hp or so in 1998
670hp or so in 1999 |
Re: B19 RUNAWAY video
did you guys do your own motors ?
sounds like a great combo.. the video is great! what type of deck was on it? who did the bolsters? all the best Christian |

670hp or so in 1999 Hmmm Dart II Sportsmans and almost 700....Prolly done a tad more than pocketportin...:drink: Iīd love to test those heads on my flowbench... 6 inch rods or 5.7 and lightweight crank ? Donīt have to tell me If you donīt want to but also how high a compression in static and how high cranking pressure (@220) ? And a "quite" stout roller too in the neighbourhood of 250degr at 050 with a 0.600 lift? |
Re: B19 RUNAWAY video
The race boat started as a 1971 Magnum sport cruiser. It had T/Volvos, cabin, head, and
kitchen. The deck was cut off and throw away. The hull was ground down to a few stringers and totally re-build using dupont kevlar, new stringers, new bulk heads and new herring bone(cross bracing) was added. All of the hull, deck and dash work was done by Dave Fox of Fiberglass Services, in Banregat LIght, NJ. An Activator deck was taken ,cut down the middle from bow to stern using a radial saw. Then extra material was added to widen the deck and this was used to fabricate a new deck. The dash was patterned of an Apache. We went to PA and used the race boat Predator as a pattern for the dash. The bolster was done by a friend in the upholstery business, he ran the boat Indigo, a 30 scarab, also build by Dave Fox. We did the motors mostly ourselves. We did have some help from time to time from two freinds, Dale from Predator Carbs and George from Auto Enterprises. We also had some help from Doug and Tommy at Professional Marine Racing , when we first built the high compression motors. |
Re: B19 RUNAWAY video
So when did the Runaways race history start?
Hmmm Dale From Predator was involved...figures  Remember when Predator Carbs hit the Street Racing Scene in Scandinavia in the mid 80īs... |

Re: B19 RUNAWAY video
That would be nice to see those infos...Iīm in the process of building a stack fuel injected similar engine with Victor Jr heads and a 260 050 and 0.625 roller...comp will be in the neighbourhood on 13.1 static and cranking as much I can get by with.
Put two of those kind into Runaway...how does that ring? |

back to life and her first race was 1990, her last race was 1999. She started racing in Production "A" class with about 400hp per side, running 66-69mph. She finished racing in Sport "B" class with about 670 per side, running 102mph. When she finished Sport "B" was not really a sportsman class. We raced against 38-40ft boats, with canopies, full race staggered engines, SSM 5 & 6 drives. Many of these "B" boats, Banker, Jawana, Dragon Lady & Instigator, went on to run very successfully in super V. It was tons of fun, great people, incredibly expensive, but no regrets. My only regret, is that I was an idiot for selling her, and I can not blame anyone but myself for that one. |

Put two of those kind into Runaway...how does that ring? I dug out some of my old notes. Compression ratio 14.4. Cranking pressure 265psi, my guess would have been a little under 250, seems a little higher than I remember, but thats what my hand written note said. Ran well on Sunoco 112, but ran much better on Torco C-12+. The guys at the fuel depot, made us a custom blend close to C-12, but better. The first time we ran the high compression motors in a race using the Torco custom blend, the boat ran like a rocket. We never went back to Sunoco, ran Torco, (plus Sunoco that we were required to purchase at site) last 3 seasons of racing. |
Re: B19 RUNAWAY video
Thank you ...that was some high strung SBīs (Small blocks)

Re: B19 RUNAWAY video
Several have asked for some engine pictures. Here is a video tour from 1997 (camera work not to good). Engines about 1 minute in and again towards the end. Here is the link for my web site video page http://dkorinc.homestead.com/vidgal.html

can you tell us what dave fox and lindsey pierees involvement was if any in the project / team??
|
Dave Fox (Fiberglass Services) Barnegat Light, NJ did all of the glass work.
He took the boat from a junker/sinker and make her into a world champion race hull. |
Thanks Frank! Its always a pleasure to read your posts. Hope all is well. I learned many interesting stories from Dave and Lindsey about how to make a boat fast just with a little set up and bottom work. Trying to get back in contact with them now.
Regards, Chris |
