One version of the original Cigarette held "THE" UIM class one record at 92.555mph for years and years. Hp was about 450 in those days.................... Nobody broke a hundred officially until we did it with Toleman's 38' Aluminum Cougar cat with a 12' wide wing 6' in the air over the cockpit and a pair of app. 500's.

Brownie,

That is interesting
How did they manage to achieve that type of speed with a non stepped hull I am assuming they were a heavy layup boat do to the conditions they raced in
From what they told me at the recent chicago show a new 38covergirl Top Gun with 525s was only good for 92 with a stepped hull.

did the boats have a 24 deadrise?

I think the first V bottom that broke 100 was Gene Whipp and Steve Stepp in Steve's Velocity.

The old 35 Benihana that my son and I are restoring set a couple of speed records in the high 80's. The horsepower in the late 70's was mid 700 or so.

My Top Banana had McBett's engines (I wasn't on the preferred list from Mercruiser!!!!) and the fastest I ever saw that boat run was 96.

BUT....that was in the day of non GPS speedometers...I had a Nordskog with a pitot tube hanging down. The boat was very light on fuel, at the end of a race, and the conditions were ideal for that length boat, that day.

2 Attachment(s)
These are my period correct...."retro engines"... that are going into the Benihana when it is finished.

They dynoed at 720 each.

That boat wont run that fast. More like 86 all day.

The boat that held the record was the "Little Cigarette" which had a wood deck, I think.

ok say it only runs 86 we are talking about old tech resin bucket non stepped with in the area of 500 hp a side with old prop technology so drives were set in deep running faster
and by the way they were raced they had to be some what of a heavy layup or they would have come apart

Brownie what was the size and the weight you think of the little cigarette with the wood deck

I was originally refering to the large resin one called "the cigarette"
