Billy is in Ft.aud. clean and free, I saw him at the Ft. Laud. boat show this past Oct. we had a great time recalling the good old days, One story we recalled is when his throttleman broke his foot two days before a big race, I got a frantic call to go throttle the 38` Scarab for the Cowes torquay Cowes race in England. He flew me over and back on the Concorde, I arrived the night before the race, it was dark we checked the boat over, next day jumped in won the race and set a course record of 79.8 moh for the 248 mile course, ran out of fuel just before finish line and limped accross, That win cinched him the Harmsworth trophy, Betty Cook, Toleman, James Beard, and several other top boats were there as well. I got paid in excess of $25,000 cash for the three days, and I was back at work in the Gentry shop in Miami Monday morning. Billy E. is one of the best guys around, and loves the Offshore, he was one of the best and a major legend in the sport. 7XCHAMP

Yep, sold on eBay for $25k in the fall, was bidding on it but it was too far away. It was a donated boat. He is still using some of the same pics from the first auction too, the last 3.

Dear 7X Champ,

You are correct, Bill is one of the greatest. I met him when I was about 13 years old when he drove Evil Ways to the production class victory in the 1977 Benihana Grand Prix in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ with Bob Latham on the throttles. Then three years later he won the Open Class in Long Shot 144. At 16 years old he paid me $100 to wax the hull before the race, and after the victory he gave me another bonus and told me that it was the wax job the pushed him to first place. He was a great guy and I love to talk with him. If you know how I can contact him, please send me an e-mail. Thanks for getting back to me.

Sincerely,

John
