The single engine was a Sam Sarra special.

There was another that was sold to John Mecum and he won the Houston Channel Derby in it....don't know which of the above mentioned that was.

One consideration on purpose of designs;
the deck of this Magnum 27' is much similar one to those then designs from J.C.Simon for its first Cary 32' and for the Cobras. Also the hull of these 27' is much similar one to the Cobras.....

4-D : Welcome to the forums. An intereting story about your boat. In 1967 or 68- I was a test driver for Carl Kiekhaefer in Sarasota fla. Plant 7. I was the lead driver and my crew consisted of 8 other drivers I was responsible for. Since I was the lead guy I was always chosen to do the special tests, and rough water testing. Your boat, and I am 99% sure it is the same, showed up at Sarasota one day all covered up, like top secret special straight thru drive from Oshkosh wisconsin for special immediate testing, and I was chosen to drive the boat, after some lengthy sucking up. When they uncovered it, I almost wet myself, there it was, still had the number 4 on it all yellow with black bolster seat. Anyway it had one of the first experimental 482`s and one of the first #3 speedmasters. she ran a two blade prop. I think it was a 24` pitch 1.1:1 gear, as that`s all they had. This was one of the badest boats of it`s time and I got to drive it and try to break it. I think the fastest I saw out of the boat was about 68 to 70 mph. what a ride, I did everything except flip and roll it. I eventually broke the U-joint assy. which broke the transom plate, the boat was sinking, I stuffed rags and my cloths in the hole to save her, she never went all the way down. With that they took her back to Oshkosh for evaluation, I never saw her again, but that boat is what sparked my career, and pushed me to become a seven time world Offshore race champion, and holder of two world offshore kilo speed records. I have been wanting to tell this story to the current owner since I saw it in these forums. Take good care of her, she is one of the greatest boats of my time. 7XCHAMP

4-D: I think after rereading this thread, I may have mistaken your boat. I presume your boat is the white one pictured in this thread, if so sorry for confusion, it`s still a great boat. The boat I was speaking about was the Yellow # 4 pictured. The boat that Don A raced. 7XCHAMP
