Repaired -ring in-copy- new-replica
 

Whats the view on an old classic that is not fit to go to sea, broken in half, delaminated, burnt etc and you would like to create a replica.
When is a repair a repair or a new build..slip the wheel off and a new boat underneath it

Its an issue in the car vintage car game.
Has this been brought up on a thread before.
Would it suffice to have a piece of the old boat knowing the original no longer exists?

A bit like the yacht Endeavour, what a great machine to see but I think only the bracket holding the compass is original.

Yes in answer to your question, assuming the original is gone or is un repairable and you can rig with period equipment.

Problem is solved on the Scandinavian Classic Offshore rules that if the model has been introduced(=built) before 1977 and it is still built/you build an exact copy of one, you´re allowed to run it.
On the European Vintage car scene it is that there´s separate classes those that are real former racers and then national series where s.c. youngtimers (cars with no racehistory) can run.
Thisway the real racers are not raced to death as new racecars can be built from "scratch".

I would say your honoring a peice that no long exsits, do you have a project in mind?

The only thing that HORBA would have a problem with, is if a bunch of people showed up with like 5 or so KAAMA Scarabs or Michelob Lights We don't want anyone to take away from the originals.

If you want to recreate a boat that no longer exists, like the original Cigarette with an old 32 foot Cary hull and deck, fine.....everyone knows that is not the original boat.

It is a fine line, we want people to be interested in the old boats, but we really don't want clones that the general public would become confused about, especially if the real one is sitting right next to it at a dock.

I come from a vintage car racing background too. I think the other concern is, if someone has a hull ID tag (or some other ID marker that would be analogous to a tub tag or VIN) from a well known boat and does a restoration/replicaition, that the replica could at some point be "misconstrued" to be the original. I think Charlie implied this when he said that "everyone knows it's not the original boat". But, I've seen some angry people and some infamous law suits where someone has the motor and transaxle out of a Ferarri GP car and someone else has the tub tag and both guys think they have the original car after "restoration"...

in my mind, it goes back to the original..that defines a restoration or a replica. if you have a scarab and paint KAAMA down the side your creaating a replica. if you actually have an old raceboat, and say the hull is delaminated and toast, so you splash or otherwise build a new hull for it, you would still be restoring it to seaworthy condition provided you you made as exact a copy as possible, using the same demensions, materials and build process used in the original, and as much of theoriginal boat as possible maintaining the lineage of the boat. or think of a classic boat as having a soul, you can do what ever it takes to keep the old girl alive as long as its still got soul, just remember, clones got no soul....

Man, it's such a fine line... Retubbing an old race car because the tub is worn out would clearly be considered restoration (until the old tub shows up at the track...). I guess it seems like the same thing in your circumstance, to me at least...
