I guess these two shots (decades apart) are of the same boat? Is it still around over there in the US? I thought it looked really cool in that polished alloy finish.

I'm sure as soon as Andy wakes up, he will have a lot of info for you.

I'm up....I'm up...

Short history lesson for the boat.

Builder/Designer Phil Caricoff
Material Aluminum
Spec.'s 40 feet long, 7'4" maximum beam w/ 22 degree deadrise.
Weight 8800 pounds with no fuel.....

The boat was build in 1973 and raced as the Triple Bee Special with a straight shaft configuration until 1978. The boat would run with the shafts and was adandon down in Florida until 1979 when Frand Cichon purchased it from the owner and brought it back for a re-fit going to #3 speedmasters and all aluminum Can-Am fuel injected engines. The boat was a pet project and development continued for twenty years with the boat racing in APBA "S", "M", "D", Super-V" and "B" class. power ranged from 500HP to over 1000HP in Super-V trim. In her current set-up with 510cu.in. Sterling engines and 750HP the boat will run a consistant 90MPH all day in anything the Great Lake or Oceans will throw at her.

We still run the boat when our schedules permit. Frank passed away in 2005 after a 8.5 year battle with cancer. The boat is now sitting behind the shop covered and race ready when the urge rises again.

Attached are a few more photos from years past.

Andy thanks for the info - interesting read. Nice pics too. Just one question - what's the deal with the Cigarette logo on the boat?

CIG3 08-06-2007 09:41 AM

We are very close friends with Scott Smith and Craig Barrie formerly of Cigarette Racing Team. The boat was alway prepped for Key West at Cigarette Factory. In exchange we alway ran a Cigarette logo on the boat.

OK! By the way - was this a one off hull or are there others out there? I sure like the design.

CIG3 08-06-2007 12:10 PM

One off design.....It would be a cool project to build a new one with the advances in technology.

I think was a very interesting project. One of the most beautiful tin mono of the seventies-eighties.
Very better of the more famous but less aesthetical CUV 38.'
Many thanks for the interesting info about this unknow(about the datas) boat.

P.S. anyone know something about the first driver Steve Babin?

Not retired, just re-charging. Things are differant with Old Uncle Frank gone. Just not the same. We'll be back just need to regroup. The OPA group really took off with this thing and it is nice to see that the vision we always had for offshore with the Silver Cup Series is being taken to the next level.
