87 Tempest boat?

Im new to the forum and relativley new to boating. I've been interested in purchasing an 33' 87 Tempest located near me. Although I haven't found too much info online about the boat. Maybe its labeled wrong in the Boat Trader I saw, or something. Can anyone give me some info about these boats or any sites to check with info.

Btw, it has 2 454s and TRS drives. Supposed to be pretty clean. other than that, i dont know much. Im going to hopefully see the boat today and talk to the owner. any help is greatly appreciated. THANKS!!!

Wehre are you located , maybe another member near you could go check it out with you. The tempsts were good hulls.

I have a friend who knows a good deal about boats who is going to come with us to check it out. But he hasn't heard of Tempest either. He has a 01 Baja Outlaw and has done plenty of work to it. So mechanically we're good, but I just couldnt find any info on the Tempest online. Thanks for the response Ryan.

I'm pretty sure its a superboat and I'm pretty sure that superboat still make this boat. Do a search in the superboat section and you should get the answers you seek

Does it look like these boats? If it is a Superboat tempest these old girls are still tearing it up and winning races.

No, the ad for the 32 tempest is a Tempest, not an SB.
We had a 44 back in 1988 for a season. That was not a great boat. But the 32 and 38 hp's they built seemed really nice. I remember a 32 w/ obs doing a miami to ME run in like 86???

See if you can find a picture of the WAZZUP race boat...Not the fountain. Its a 32 Viper.
Tempest bought the Viper molds back in the early 80's

Nice boats. Well built- Tempest was a custom yacht builder and the quality of construction was as good as any. Kiekhaefer had one for a while- a 38'. They're not flyweights and the freeboard is kind of shallow but if you can get a deal on it, it could be a nice boat for someone. As with all used boats, get it surveyed. It doesn't matter how much a friend or neighbor "knows" if you buy it and find out the glass encasing the stringers, bulkheads and transom are holding in the crumbles that used to be marine plywood, the bargain you got will no longer be much of a deal.

dont know the history but when i was in the coast guard in miami we used them to chase down drug smugglers and i can tell you one thing for sure is they will handle any sea conditions . we had them powered by twin diesels

This Tempest was for sale in the Detroit area back in the spring, sold for around 15,000.00. If you could look beyond paint job not a bad boat.

Thanks for all the info guys. Very helpful I must say. But sadly, I saw the boat on Friday and was not impressed. Its a nice boat for sure, if it hadnt been neglect for who knows how many years. The last registration on it was from 03, and the guy selling said he ran it 1.5-2 years ago. I'm no genius, but I think his math is a bit off..... The ad said it was "very clean" and of course it was not. It needed a bunch of mechanical clean up, new belts, hoses, etc.. the drives looked like hell, the interior even worse. And not to mention some cracks and peeling in the gel coat on the hull. Too bad it wasn't "very clean" or I would have bought it that day. Back to the drawing board I guess.

Thank you all again for the info. I do really appreciate it.

That boat was never a tempest.... That was the " Mary K " Viper.

BODYSHOT1 09-21-2007 02:00 PM

Mary "K" is now Wazzup = Viper

Imagine That, now runs as a patrol boat for OPA, owned by Alan Pettit = Tempest

there are pics of both on Freeze Frame right now from Cambridge Md.
